{"id":10233,"date":"2024-11-25T11:37:41","date_gmt":"2024-11-25T11:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/25\/israeli-cabinet-sanctions-countrys-oldest-newspaper-over-critical-coverage-and-publishers-comments\/"},"modified":"2024-11-25T11:37:41","modified_gmt":"2024-11-25T11:37:41","slug":"israeli-cabinet-sanctions-countrys-oldest-newspaper-over-critical-coverage-and-publishers-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/25\/israeli-cabinet-sanctions-countrys-oldest-newspaper-over-critical-coverage-and-publishers-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli cabinet sanctions country\u2019s oldest newspaper over critical coverage and publisher\u2019s comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wquu9u002m26p10k1p6cqh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel\u2019s cabinet unanimously voted to sanction the nation\u2019s oldest newspaper, Haaretz, on Sunday citing its critical coverage of the war following the October 7 Hamas attacks and comments by the outlet\u2019s publisher calling for sanctions on senior government officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000c3b6mf1ayc4mz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Haaretz, which is widely respected internationally, has provided critical coverage of Israel\u2019s war following the Hamas attacks on October 7, including investigations into abuses allegedly committed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as military operations expanded across Gaza and into neighboring Lebanon.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00033b6mrtyjzj80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The proposal, put forward by communications minister Shlomo Kar\u2019i, will end government advertising in the newspaper and cancel all subscriptions for state employees and employees of state-owned companies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wrrm7r000a3b6k7u3sjqvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Haaretz described the move as an attempt to \u201csilence a critical, independent newspaper.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00043b6m2pxhw6o0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a statement following the vote, Kar\u2019i wrote: \u201cWe must not allow a reality in which the publisher of an official newspaper in the State of Israel will call for the imposition of sanctions against it and will support the enemies of the state in the midst of a war and will be financed by it, while international bodies are undermining the legitimacy of the State of Israel, its right to self-defense and are actually imposing sanctions against it and its leaders.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00053b6m4zev6vok@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Amos Schocken, the newspaper\u2019s publisher, drew criticism for referring to Palestinian \u201cfreedom fighters\u201d during a speech at an event organized by the outlet in London on October 27.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00063b6m54jy9e79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt (the Netanyahu government) doesn\u2019t care about imposing a cruel apartheid regime on the Palestinian population. It dismisses the costs of both sides for defending the settlements while fighting the Palestinian freedom fighters that Israel calls terrorists,\u201d he reportedly said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00073b6mzg6w7bjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Following widespread criticism of the comments in Israel, Schocken clarified his comments saying that he did not believe Hamas militants were freedom fighters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00083b6myp60kd8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In an editorial Haaretz said that Schocken was referring to \u201cPalestinians living under occupation and oppression in the West Bank.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem00093b6mtau5j0cz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Still, it said Schocken had \u201cerred\u201d by referring to anyone who deliberately harms and terrorizes civilians as \u201cfreedom fighters,\u201d arguing that the correct term was \u201cterrorists.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000a3b6mx1evljk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the speech Schocken also called for international sanctions on Israeli leaders as the only way to force the government to change course.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000b3b6mra6mm1cp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn a sense, what is taking place now in the occupied territories and in part of Gaza is a second Nakba,\u201d he said. \u201cA Palestinian state must be established and the only way to achieve this, I think, is to apply sanctions against Israel, against the leaders who oppose it and against the settlers.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000d3b6mbs07z53r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In addition to Schocken\u2019s comments at the London event, Kar\u2019i singled out the newspaper\u2019s coverage of the war in his statement on Sunday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000e3b6m8qxxrgk5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe decision came in the wake of many articles that damaged the legitimacy of the State of Israel in the world and its right to self-defense,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000f3b6mqwlpedc9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Haaretz slammed the move in a statement on Sunday, calling it \u201canother step in Netanyahu\u2019s journey to dismantle Israeli democracy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000g3b6mbxvmm6k7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cLike his friends Putin, Erdo\u011fan, and Orb\u00e1n, Netanyahu is trying to silence a critical, independent newspaper,\u201d the statement said. \u201cHaaretz will not balk and will not morph into a government pamphlet that publishes messages approved by the government and its leader.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The move comes two months after the military raided and shut down Al Jazeera\u2019s office in Ramallah and six months after the government shut down the broadcaster\u2019s operations inside Israel in May, prompting condemnation from the United Nations and rights groups.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3wqvkem000i3b6mp9f59bnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Friday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said preliminary investigations showed at least 137 journalists and media workers had been killed covering the war, making it the deadliest period
