Three of the countries that picked a female leader in 2024 \u2013 North Macedonia, Namibia and Mexico \u2013 did so for the first time in their nation\u2019s history.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vf0fnm00003b6mwff1ovue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the post-World War II period, the first woman was elected to lead a UN country 64 years ago. Another 18 countries have had two female leaders, nine countries have had three female leaders, and just two countries \u2013 Finland and Iceland \u2013 have been headed by four different female leaders. Still, a woman has never served as head of state or government in 115 UN member countries.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wuaeh200023b6nrjpy6fz3@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241029-wip-leader-bubbles\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241029-wip-leader-bubbles\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241029-wip-leader-bubbles\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241029-wip-leader-bubbles\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wub0g900003b6opem68zg9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first continent with a UN member state to have a female leader after WWII was Asia. In 1960, Sri Lanka \u2013 known then as Ceylon \u2013 elected its first female prime minister, Sirimavo Bandaranaike. She entered politics after her husband was assassinated while serving as prime minister.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wug9fw000c3b6oeh0wo8tc@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241008-wip-asia\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-asia\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241008-wip-asia\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-asia\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuc04g00023b6osl8619d0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since then, women have led 13 other countries in Asia. A lot of them came into politics through their husbands or fathers, in former colonial countries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuewh600093b6o4rvar9bm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMany of the earliest women to come to power were those with dynastic connections to power, and in places where the dynastic connection was tied very closely to the struggle for independence,\u201d said Minna Cowper-Coles, research fellow at the Global Institute for Women\u2019s Leadership at King\u2019s College London.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuewh6000a3b6oi1ey2wtn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asia also leads when it comes to women\u2019s tenure in power, with Sheikh Hasina holding the record for the highest number of years served by a woman as a national leader.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wud56t00043b6oea0fap6b@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241024-wip-longest-tenure\/\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241024-wip-longest-tenure\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241024-wip-longest-tenure\/\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241024-wip-longest-tenure\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuej3p00073b6obi1mc5bt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hasina was prime minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, and again from 2009 until her resignation in August 2024 following massive anti-government protests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wugtfq000h3b6oq58o02ql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her father, an independence leader, was Bangladesh\u2019s first prime minister.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wuimzq00013b6qd1gq2u5s@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241008-wip-americas\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-americas\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241008-wip-americas\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-americas\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuiiyg00003b6qykgcfa73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Isabel Per\u00f3n was the first female head of state in the Americas. Her husband, Juan Per\u00f3n, was president of Argentina and died in office in 1974. As the vice president, she took over many of his duties when he became ill, and was sworn in to the presidency after his death.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuj4rz00063b6q6m8mfla9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In October, Claudia Sheinbaum was inaugurated as the first female president of Mexico.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wuj7wb00083b6qaowb6c2e@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241008-wip-sub-saharan-africa\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-sub-saharan-africa\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241008-wip-sub-saharan-africa\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-sub-saharan-africa\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuiwkl00043b6q9c8acmte@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first woman to become leader of an African country was Elisabeth Domitien, who was appointed prime minister of the Central African Republic in 1975.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuk8dt000d3b6qd56a1oef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first elected female head of state in Africa was Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who became president of Liberia in 2006.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuk8dt000e3b6qyg0uonan@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2021, Tunisia became the first Arab country to be governed by a woman, when Najla Bouden was appointed prime minister by the country\u2019s president.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wukbu7000g3b6q49jpz7gi@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241008-wip-europe\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-europe\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241008-wip-europe\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241008-wip-europe\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuk2ba000b3b6qf3kn5bsq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Margaret Thatcher became Europe\u2019s first female prime minister in 1979. A few months later, Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo of Portugal became the continent\u2019s second female head of government.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuknoy000l3b6q6ewozfr1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since 2010, 28 countries in Europe have had at least one female leader, and the region now has the highest proportion of countries to have had a female leader. Around two-thirds, or 65%, of the 43 UN member countries in the region have had a female leader, and just under a quarter of them are currently being led by a woman.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wuknoy000m3b6qix8b2l1r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            European female leaders have also achieved significant tenure, with five leaders in the top 10 for longest time served, all with over 10 years in office. Angela Merkel, who first became Germany\u2019s chancellor in 2005, held the role for 16 years.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm4wukqvy000o3b6qijl6rlb1@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20241031-wip-oceania\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241031-wip-oceania\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20241031-wip-oceania\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20241031-wip-oceania\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4wukfin000j3b6q7ylmg8zw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jenny Shipley was the first female prime minister of New Zealand, serving from 1997 to 1999.
