On Monday, Maduro\u2019s minister of internal affairs claimed Venezuela had arrested over 100 people from several countries including the US who he alleged were linked to \u201cacts of destabilization.\u201d Without detailing or offering evidence for his claims, Cabello suggested some of those in custody were linked to the Venezuelan opposition. In a separate move, Venezuela announced it would cut diplomatic ties with Paraguay, after its President Santiago Pe\u00f1a reiterated his recognition of Gonz\u00e1lez.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp0009356mzh45lges@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Venezuelan opposition leader fled to Spain in September to seek asylum after Maduro\u2019s government issued a warrant for his arrest. He is currently visiting the US and on Monday visited the White House.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000a356mi9nc4rc1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his video message Sunday, Gonz\u00e1lez said Maduro had \u201cdistorted the principles\u201d of the military and called for the armed forces to recognize his authority from January 10.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000b356mer9y1j21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOur National Armed Forces is called to be a guarantor of sovereignty and respect for the popular will. It is our duty to act with honor, merit and conscience,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000c356mphwvhtrw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino L\u00f3pez rejected the call and said Monday that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces of Venezuela (FANB) would recognize Maduro as president.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000d356mcxo61fj6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMr. Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia does not understand that the FANB is a pristine institution, which owes itself to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and does not obey the designs or mandates of other imperial powers,\u201d Padrino said in a message on national television surrounded by the high military command.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000f356mfuhbazb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Sunday, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela Jorge Rodr\u00edguez reiterated the Venezuelan government\u2019s position that Gonz\u00e1lez would face arrest if he returns to the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000g356micid6l2z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The arrest warrant issued against the opposition leader in September accuses him of terrorism, conspiracy and other crimes related to the election \u2013 charges Gonz\u00e1lez denies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li82wp000h356mjs870w7n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On January 2, the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps of Venezuela offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to his arrest.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5lii1b3000q356m7q9higvi@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"support-for-gonzalez-protests-against-maduro\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Support for Gonz\u00e1lez, protests against Maduro<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lki6sq0011356mxc4d05a6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez is currently embarked on an international tour across the Americas, where he has been gathering support from allies in a show of defiance against Maduro.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5loe0xb00023b6mzh0b8fw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the weekend, Gonz\u00e1lez met with the presidents of Argentina and Uruguay in South America.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5li77zu0000356mnk4bbmk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Monday, he met with US President Joe Biden in Washington, telling reporters he had a fruitful and long conversation with him at the White House.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lkylwq001e356m5nrlux03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBoth leaders agreed there is nothing more essential to the success of democracy than respecting the will of the people, as expressed through a transparent and accountable electoral process, and that Gonzalez Urrutia\u2019s campaign victory should be honored through a peaceful transfer back to democratic rule,\u201d the White House said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lkihgg0018356minl2rvdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez said he has also been in contact with the team of President-elect Donald Trump but did not expand on their conversations. He declined to comment on remarks from Sen. Bernie Moreno suggesting that Trump planned to negotiate with Maduro.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lqggyn00003b6mi4u1n2at@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez said on X he had met in Washington with Trump\u2019s pick for US National Security adviser, Mike Waltz, saying he \u201cassured us that the United States, and the world, will be alert about what happens in our country.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5ll72io0024356ms5kclwas@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s fellow opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado \u2013 who is also in hiding \u2013 has called for supporters to demonstrate in the streets of Venezuela and other parts of the world on January 9, one day before Maduro is set to be sworn in to install a new government.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5ll6ok9001u356m5obb0uve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Both Maduro and Gonz\u00e1lez have previously pledged to inaugurate their own governments on January 10.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5ll6ok9001w356mid8fliyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In calling for the January 9 protests, Corina Machado said Maduro would not give up power on his own and that Venezuelans \u201cmust make him leave.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5ll6ok9001x356m8p6fc8r0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She asked those attending the demonstrations to wear clothing with the three colors of the Venezuelan flag: yellow, blue and red.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5ll6ok9001y356m1ojtt0zn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis January 9th, EVERYONE in the streets, in Venezuela and around the world,\u201d she tweeted. Gonz\u00e1lez echoed the call, writing on X: \u201cEveryone in the streets of our beloved country!\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5lqtjko000k3b6m7oj679n6@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"minister-claims-mercenaries-arrested\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Minister claims \u2018mercenaries\u2019 arrested<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lqt8nl000f3b6macp6u1gk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s appeal to the military came as Venezuelan authorities announced they had arrested at least 125 people \u2013 among them foreigners from several countries including the United States \u2013 who were accused of being \u201cmercenaries\u201d involved in \u201cdestabilization actions.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5lr0bjf000y3b6mnwcecn15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Minister of Internal Affairs, Justice and Peace Diosdado Cabello made the claim at a press conference on Monday, during which he alleged some of those in custody had ties to opposition leaders. It is not clear whether these arrests are included in the 125 figure.
