Israel has vehemently denied that it is engaged in genocide and continues to fight South Africa in court.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az00093b6mmwoi7k8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ireland\u2019s declaration of intervention puts forward no further allegations against Israel, instead focusing on the legal framework for its involvement in South Africa\u2019s case. Noting that the legal definition of genocide requires an \u201cintent to destroy, in whole or in part\u201d a target population, the document submitted by Ireland argues that intent might be inferred \u201cin any case where a reasonable person would have foreseen that\u201d genocide is \u201cthe natural and probable consequence of the acts of the perpetrator.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000a3b6mp4wfmyss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIreland respectfully submits that the perpetrator does not need to have, as his or her purpose, the commission of the crime of genocide when committing any one or more of the material elements of the crime,\u201d the declaration continues. \u201cThe crime may also be committed where a perpetrator \u2013 regardless of his or her purpose \u2013 knows (or should know) that the natural and probable consequence of these acts is either to destroy or contribute to the destruction of the protected group \u2026 and proceeds regardless.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000c3b6myw0wm74c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Irish government previously announced its plan to intervene in the case in March 2024. Its intervention marks the latest development in its increasingly outspoken criticism of Israel\u2019s war conduct.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000d3b6m9mrr3i60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ireland had consistently criticized Israeli policies in the occupied West Bank and Gaza before the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which killed roughly 1,200 people and saw 250 taken hostage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000e3b6m5r278fes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza in response, Irish politicians across the political spectrum and the public have expressed concern over what has been largely viewed as a heavy-handed response. As of Tuesday, Israeli attacks have killed at least 45,885 people in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza\u2019s health ministry.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000f3b6m5odtap14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Relations between Ireland and Israel reached a nadir in December after Israel shuttered its embassy in Dublin. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar accused Ireland of \u201cantisemitic rhetoric\u201d in an official statement, claiming that \u201cIreland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000g3b6mrm5eghgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the time, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris described Israel\u2019s decision as \u201cdeeply regrettable.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000h3b6mf7ihpmwk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Much of Ireland\u2019s sympathy for the plight of Palestinians emerges from the country\u2019s centuries-old subjugation by its British neighbors. In Northern Ireland, which is still under British rule, nationalist communities regularly fly the Palestinian flag \u2013 and some loyalists fly the Israeli flag in response.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5n3p1az000j3b6mk1zb4oio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel\u2019s current president, Isaac Herzog, has Irish roots. His father, also a famous Israeli politician, was born in Belfast.
