Now residents are moving back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm480y8jh000s2cp504lhd29u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Surrounded by forest-covered mountains cloaked in mist, a patchwork quilt of green farmland and steel-blue waves breaking on mangrove-strewn mudflats, Lai Chi Wo does not look like it belongs in Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00023b6mh9xd93jd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The remote 300-year-old village is one of the city\u2019s oldest settlements \u2014 and one of its most biodiverse.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00033b6m907w55u4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Its location is no accident: it draws on<strong> <\/strong>the traditional philosophies of the Hakka people, one of Hong Kong\u2019s pre-colonial indigenous groups, who built the settlement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00043b6mlv3exspp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe maintain what is called a feng-shui forest, to preserve the village,\u201d says Susan Wong. The 73-year-old grandmother is the village chief, and was born in Lai Chi Wo, when the town was home to around 1,000 residents. \u201cFrom our ancestors to now, it has been passed down, not to let anyone cut down the trees. If you cut all the trees out, the mountain will become bare, and nothing can cover the village.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00053b6mngo6wzw0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Feng shui \u2014 which literally means \u201cwind\u201d and \u201cwater\u201d \u2014 is a design philosophy about how homes, villages and cities should be arranged for good fortune.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00063b6mdxg9yv9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Lai Chi Wo, the position of the forest is intended to shelter the village from typhoons, prevent landslides, and manage extreme heat and cold.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00073b6mqi94wyui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, in the 1960s, residents began to leave their ancestral home: Hong Kong was industrializing rapidly, and it was becoming hard to make a living from farming.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00083b6mxwxu1c10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe didn\u2019t even have shoes or clothes to wear,\u201d Wong recalls. The roots of banyan trees twined around open doorways, and wild boar or lost hikers were the only foot traffic through the decaying village.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000d3b6mp7r71uxf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Lai Chi Wo was not entirely forgotten.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000e3b6mjjpp9h1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cElsewhere in Hong Kong, many abandoned villages had houses collapsed beyond recognition and vegetation invaded<strong> <\/strong>the whole village,\u201d says Chiu Ying Lam, head of the Hong Kong Countryside Foundation. However, when he first visited Lai Chi Wo in 2009, he was surprised to find several homes were well maintained.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000f3b6md5d11a74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lam speculated that these absentee homeowners were still connected to their ancestral home, and were planning to return one day, perhaps to retire. In 2015, Ah Him Tsang and his wife, who are not Hakka, were one of the first families to move to the village, looking for a life \u201ccloser to nature\u201d to raise their then-infant son.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000j3b6mxc1c0epa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Like many residents in Lai Chi Wo, Tsang works a variety of jobs: he grows vegetables and cash crops on a small farm, and on weekends, runs \u201cHakka Experience\u201d homestays and a store that serves locally grown tea, coffee, and homemade vegan ice cream to tourists who pass through.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000k3b6m034krm60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI also grow these vegetables for my staycation program, (for a) farm-to-table dining experience,\u201d says Tsang, adding that the Hakka Experience is designed to give visitors a more authentic experience of village life. \u201cYou can really feel the quietness, the serenity of the nature here. I hope more people can stay longer and enjoy the slow pace.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4uz73is00183b6m77hzhf8w@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"homecoming\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Homecoming<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000m3b6mt477nou9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The influx of new residents to Lai Chi Wo encouraged more of the original residents<strong> <\/strong>to move back, too.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000n3b6m5sr5hqya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Upon retiring, Wong returned to Hong Kong from the UK to care for her elderly parents, and heard about the revitalization project.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000o3b6m21p3gmec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2019, she decided to return to the village with her now-103-year-old father, into the home they were both born in. \u201cI\u2019m very happy because I like this village. I have so many friends (who have) come back,\u201d she says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000p3b6mt7rbmlw4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With her father, Wong runs a small farm, growing mandarin oranges, lemons, chilis, flowers, and vegetables, and uses organic agriculture techniques, such as grinding up discarded oyster shells to make plant food.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000q3b6mws1qap97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The project also introduced new crops like coffee, which grows in the shade. This agroforestry technique protects the forest by growing high-value plants around the perimeter of the native woodland, while boosting profits for farmers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000r3b6m7z0b13f1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai Chi Wo now has around 700 coffee plants across several farms, making it the \u201cbiggest coffee-producing region in Hong Kong,\u201d says Ryan Siu Him Leung, senior project officer at the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at the University of Hong Kong, which oversaw parts of Lai Chi Wo\u2019s revitalization program.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000s3b6mtwfsyp5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The University of Hong Kong is leasing some of the land for experimental farming, and helping villagers turn their crops into higher-value products in a licensed food processing plant in nearby Sha Tau Kok, on Hong Kong\u2019s border with mainland China. Products include pickles and unusual fruit jams, or seasonal foods like popular radish cake for Chinese New Year, says Leung.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000t3b6mjjlxcodl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re also looking at traditional Hakka recipes, and trying to explore the possibility of turning those recipes into commercial products,\u201d he says, adding that they are currently selling via local supermarket suppliers and pop-up farmers markets, and plan to launch an online shop soon, to reach more customers.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4uz79ah001b3b6mk0db5god@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-model-for-redevelopment\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A model for redevelopment<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000v3b6mjfcv02ie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While the project has garnered positive attention \u2014 including recognition from UNESCO in 2020 for cultural heritage conservation and sustainable development \u2014 it\u2019s not all been smooth sailing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000w3b6mp5g6cak4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There\u2019s been resistance from some of the original villagers, who claim they were not properly consulted about the redevelopment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000x3b6myhja3v86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Additionally, more than a decade into the project, the village is still not financially sustainable, and is supported by external funding, including government subsidies for the farmers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000y3b6mshfwxok6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Farming at such a small scale is largely unprofitable; so like Tsang, most residents have multiple income streams. Leung says that most of the new residents work remote jobs online, or in creative industries, with farming as a hobby where any income is a bonus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei000z3b6mg4kmjn2z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Leung says that, aside from preserving the town\u2019s traditional lifestyle, there\u2019s an ecological advantage to maintaining the farmland: sustainable agriculture helps to better manage water drainage and improve soil health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00103b6mqjjrf9z3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even if the village isn\u2019t economically independent, he feels it\u2019s worthwhile, and that cultivating a sustainable community is more important. \u201cAs long as there are people willing to stay in the village, and they are making their living \u2014 to me, it\u2019s financially viable for those individual households.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uz6dei00113b6m7kkfbf0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The project has become a model for sustainable revitalization, and the Forest Village Project, launched in 2024, is applying the lessons from Lai Chi Wo to two nearby hamlets, Mui Tsz Lam and Kop Tong.
