The condition is highly treatable \u2013 but not in Gaza, where healthcare institutions and supplies have been decimated by Israel\u2019s yearslong war in the Palestinian enclave.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft00033b6meiayfqsx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Earlier this month, international aid groups worked through the complex process of obtaining permission from Israeli authorities to allow Habiba to leave Gaza for treatment.    <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/cm6k9dxli00023b6mzetluq5t@published\" data-component-name=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"pull-quote\">\n<p class=\"pull-quote__text inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\">        My heart wanted to just take her with me in my arms and run across the border with her    <\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__attribution inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"attribution\">        Dr. Mohamed Kuziez, who treated Habiba in Gaza City    <\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft00073b6mjqeli9m8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Habiba is one of at least 2,500 children in Gaza in urgent need of medical evacuation, according to the UN. Under the recently signed ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, which controls Gaza, Israeli authorities are supposed to increase the number of Gaza residents allowed out for treatment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft00083b6m0o41pn6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But no medical evacuations from Gaza have taken place for two weeks. The last evacuation was on January 16, when just 12 patients were evacuated to European countries, according to the World Health Organization. Approximately 12,000 people in Gaza are still awaiting medical evacuation, according to the UN.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6jxxwl700183b6mrncabrye@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"doctors-warn-of-amputation\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Doctors warn of amputation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000a3b6mxjjdjwzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Thursday morning, Habiba was admitted to an intensive care unit in Gaza with a suspected lung infection. Surrounded by foreign and local doctors scrambling to keep her alive, she lay barely conscious, moaning in pain between each labored breath.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000d3b6msfok7i8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gangrene can lead to sepsis \u2014 an infection spreading to the bloodstream \u2014 that raises the risk of rapid organ failure and death.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000f3b6m7xkpvm00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Kuziez first treated Habiba several weeks ago, in Gaza City, and oversaw her care as medics waited for Israeli permission to move her south, a first step in the evacuation process.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000i3b6mzh8irkb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But as soon as he landed back in the US, he received news of the dramatic deterioration in her condition. \u201cI\u2019m trying to be there to support the mom, to try and provide whatever medical advice we can provide,\u201d he said, choking back tears.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000j3b6m40h5n9s2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut in the back of my mind, I am worried it may have gotten too far. There\u2019s still hope for her, but it\u2019s just decreasing by the minute.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000k3b6m2vkbmc3x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He\u2019s tormented by the knowledge that Habiba\u2019s condition could have been treated in time, if she had had access to the right facility. When Dr. Kuziez left Gaza, he recalled, \u201cmy heart wanted to just take her with me in my arms and run across the border with her.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6jx84ft000l3b6mdv85u6sz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Blocking her evacuation will be a death sentence, he warned. \u201cFor anybody with medical knowledge, it seems like a deliberate push to essentially kill this child. There\u2019s no other way to describe it.
