The South African government has not confiscated any land,\u201d Ramaphosa wrote on X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00043b6m4pdhcefp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe look forward to engaging with the Trump administration over our land reform policy and issues of bilateral interest,\u201d he wrote. He added that, while the US was a key strategic political and trade partner, it did not provide significant funding to South Africa besides a major HIV\/AIDS relief program.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00053b6m7xqmxg45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His statement comes after Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday that he would cut off all future funding to the country until there was a full investigation into allegations that \u201cSouth Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00063b6m18x5df6y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump\u2019s long-held complaint, which he\u2019d also made in 2018 during his first term, goes back to the complex land reform in South Africa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00073b6mmqsi9iww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Racist policies of the past forcefully removed Black and non-White South Africans from the land for White use. There has been a land redistribution and restitution provision in the country\u2019s constitution since South Africa emerged from its apartheid era and held its first democratic elections in 1994.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00083b6mida5d7wb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, unemployment and poverty remain acute among Black South Africans, who make up around 80% of the population, yet own a fraction of the land.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd00093b6mh4iu1fcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In January, Ramaphosa signed a bill into law that sets forth new guidelines for land expropriation, including enabling the government to expropriate land without compensation in some cases.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd000a3b6mb24vpy8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his X post Monday, Ramaphosa said the law was \u201cnot a confiscation instrument,\u201d but a legal process that \u201censures public access to land in an equitable and just manner as guided by the constitution.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6osy0hd000b3b6mku19ffjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, constitutional protections against expropriation without compensation still remain in place, and experts believe South Africa\u2019s ruling party will face legal challenges if it seeks to implement the policy.    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa responded on Monday to US President Donald Trump\u2019s threat to cut off aid over the alleged mistreatment of White farmers, denying Trump\u2019s claim that authorities were \u201cconfiscating land.\u201d \u201cSouth Africa is a constitutional democracy that is deeply rooted in the rule of law, justice and equality.
