{"id":12891,"date":"2025-02-07T11:42:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T11:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/07\/a-former-miss-america-takes-her-nuclear-sales-pitch-to-audiences-in-australia\/"},"modified":"2025-02-07T11:42:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T11:42:18","slug":"a-former-miss-america-takes-her-nuclear-sales-pitch-to-audiences-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/07\/a-former-miss-america-takes-her-nuclear-sales-pitch-to-audiences-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"A former Miss America takes her nuclear sales pitch to audiences in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q50kgj002e26p334559twy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nuclear engineer and former Miss America Grace Stanke has entered the fierce debate in Australia over its future energy policy with a 10-day national tour extolling the benefits of nuclear power in a country where it\u2019s been banned for almost 30 years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600043b6mcwepsgwf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The speaking tour is familiar territory for the 22-year-old former beauty queen, who<strong> <\/strong>said she<strong> <\/strong>studied nuclear engineering as a \u201cflex,\u201d but now works for US energy giant Constellation as a spokesperson and as an engineer on its nuclear team.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600053b6mdu8x2zku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her recent<strong> <\/strong>arrival comes at a delicate time in Australia, months before a national election that could put the opposition Liberal Party in power, along with its promises to build seven nuclear power stations \u2013 upending the current Labor government\u2019s plan to rely on renewable energy and gas.<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600063b6m5f07fl9k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For several days, Stanke has been speaking to hundreds of Australians, in events organized by Nuclear for Australia (NFA), a charity founded by 18-year-old Will Shackel, who has received backing from a wealthy Australian pro-nuclear entrepreneur.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600073b6ma6tw9yku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most talks were well-attended by attentive crowds, but not all audience members were impressed by Stanke\u2019s message.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600083b6mce1e3wlm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As she started to speak in Brisbane last Friday, a woman in the audience began shouting, becoming the first of several people to be ejected from the room as other attendees booed and jeered. One woman who was physically pushed from the premises by a security guard has since filed a formal complaint.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600093b6meswbswfz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stanke reflected on the rowdy Brisbane crowd with the poise of a seasoned pageant entrant. \u201cYou know what? I respect people because they\u2019re using their voices,\u201d she said, describing the heckling as \u201cprobably the most vocal experience I\u2019ve had.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000a3b6mmqc9vthq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those against nuclear power say it\u2019s too expensive, too unsafe and too slow to replace Australia\u2019s coal-fired power stations that would need to keep burning for several more years until nuclear plants came online.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000b3b6mlueumpwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The fact that people are even talking about<strong> <\/strong>the proposal<strong> <\/strong>shows how much public discourse has changed in the three years since voters last went to the polls, then electing climate friendly candidates and Labor\u2019s pro-renewables policy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000c3b6mcjrwvfys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now, for the first time in decades, nuclear power is back on the election agenda, at the same time a backlash is building in rural areas against renewable energy projects that some say are erasing farmland, razing forests, and dividing communities.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6q6tzc500013b6m69qd6y4k@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-numbers-game\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A numbers game<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000e3b6mgjnd4z45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Australia banned nuclear energy in 1998 as part of a political deal to win approval for the country\u2019s first and only nuclear research facility that\u2019s still operating in southern Sydney.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000f3b6mht0r7fcs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A change in government in an election, to be held before mid-May, would see seven nuclear reactors built in five states to provide power alongside renewable energy \u2013 a bold shift in direction that would not only require changes to federal law, but amendments to laws in states where premiers oppose nuclear power.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000g3b6mm877tx53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the plan proposed by Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton, the nuclear reactors would be funded by 331 billion Australian dollars ($206 billion) in public money and the first could be working by 2035.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000h3b6m1cdwcs5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Both forecasts are disputed as underestimates by the government acting on the advice of the country\u2019s independent science agency \u2013 the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) \u2013 which<strong> <\/strong>says renewables are still the cheapest and the most efficient way for Australia to reach net zero by 2050.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000i3b6m1v3p6fvq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shackel, NFA\u2019s founder, wants the nuclear ban lifted, pointing to a petition he started two years ago that has quietly accrued more than 80,000 signatures.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000j3b6menbtpvza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think we need to move away from fossil fuels. Gas is a fossil fuel. So, I think that if we want to be able to move away from those sources, nuclear energy is something that\u2019s going to be increasingly important,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000k3b6mm4kjretv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Shackel met Stanke at the COP 28 climate talks in the United Arab Emirates in 2023, an event she attended as Miss America while finishing her degree in nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She says Australia is \u201calready kind of late\u201d to nuclear energy, \u201cso, you might as well start now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000l3b6m57hp6q83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI do believe that a strong grid requires both renewables and nuclear energy combined,\u201d she said, referring to the argument for a \u201cbaseload\u201d energy source that doesn\u2019t rely on unpredictable weather.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000m3b6m5e2ncivx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That argument is challenged by experts worldwide, who say the need for \u201cbaseload\u201d energy is an outdated concept, and that stability can be achieved by other means, including batteries.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6q6vcu500043b6m5r6613pl@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"rural-opposition-to-renewables\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Rural opposition to renewables<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000o3b6mwh2uppzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While nuclear has dominated recent discussion about Australia\u2019s future energy mix, a steady rumble of discontent is growing louder from rural areas over the rapid rollout of renewable energy projects.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000p3b6mavfme42a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the Clean Energy Council, 85 renewable power generation projects are underway in Australia, along with 44 storage projects.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000q3b6mck2ufhdu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the past two years, the number of petitions on Change.org opposing renewable energy projects has almost tripled, from 14 in 2023 to 37 in 2024 \u2013 alongside Facebook groups where communities are gathering to share stories and updates on protests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000r3b6muagnmhu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Advance, a conservative campaign group that says it works to counter \u201cwoke politicians and elitist activist groups\u201d is promoting a 48-minute documentary it claims tells the \u201cuntold stories\u201d of farmers whose \u201clives have been upended by the rapid rollout of wind and solar projects.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000s3b6m601tro0p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Murrough Benson lives near the proposed site of a massive battery storage plant in Hazeldean, rural Queensland, that\u2019s currently moving through the council approvals process. He\u2019s in favor of renewables. They \u201chave their place,\u201d he said, but \u201cyou could argue that some of them are misplaced.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000t3b6mwraq51dz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He and his wife Joy moved from Sydney to the area five years ago and hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement. But now they\u2019re considering selling their house, fearing the constant hum and potential contamination of the air, land, and water from the battery system, in the event of fire or flood.  \u201cWe don\u2019t want to live with something like that across the road,\u201d said Benson.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm6rerkhi00023b6mme0owxtx@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\">Protesters gathered at Michelle Hunt&#8217;s property earlier this month to dismantle part of the fence.<\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">Jim Willmott\/Libertarian Party of Qld<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000u3b6mrgkdyw4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Michelle Hunt has more immediate issues with the construction of a solar farm next to the \u201cpiece of paradise\u201d she bought almost 20 years ago in the town of Gin Gin, also in rural Queensland.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000v3b6mstsavwef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She says a renewable energy company destroyed her fence without permission and replaced it with a wire \u201cprison fence,\u201d contravening a previous agreement to hide panels at the neighboring solar farm behind trees. Now they\u2019re in full view of the house she planned to build.  \u201cLet\u2019s face it, we are living beside an industrial electrical installation,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000w3b6m2vdndb2z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rural areas where opposition is building to renewable projects are fertile ground for Shackel and his nuclear campaign. He\u2019s already visited some areas earmarked for power stations under the Liberal proposal. And while he says NFA isn\u2019t politically aligned with either of the major parties, he accepts he\u2019s doing some of the groundwork to bring the community on side.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000x3b6mevaqvbl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think nuclear energy positions itself as a solution to some of those communities because of its low land use,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd for those communities who are desperate for jobs but don\u2019t see renewables providing that completely for them, having a nuclear plant there could be a good solution.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm6q6wj2b00083b6m3paeij5c@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"nuclear-foolishness\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Nuclear \u2018foolishness\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6000z3b6mizng3pzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bringing a former Miss America to Australia was part of a plan to raise support for nuclear power among Australian women, who according to one survey are far less enthusiastic than men about the proposal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600103b6mklkak4q4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to several people who attended sessions in various states, the audience was dominated by older men, many of whom didn\u2019t seem to need convincing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600123b6mzo40d78b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s just a way of spinning the fossil fuel industry out for a bit longer, and we cannot afford to do that,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can see how the climate is collapsing around us. Look at Los Angeles. Those poor people over there lost everything.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600143b6mo6hgtm6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Others said the panel \u2013 which included local nuclear experts \u2013 made generalizations and didn\u2019t get to the nub of issues specific to their area, like the potential strain they say a nuclear power station could have on resources in Victoria\u2019s Latrobe Valley.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600153b6ms9mc6iss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere is literally no water for a nuclear power station. The existing allocation is already committed to mine repair,\u201d said Adrian Cosgriff, a member of community advocacy group Voices of the Valley, who attended the Melbourne talk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6rju0gh00003b6mmedoawss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAustralians know nuclear power exists. That\u2019s fine. It\u2019s just not suitable for here. That\u2019s kind of the argument,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600173b6m28ih6m3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            David Hood, a civil and environmental engineer who attended the Brisbane talk, said: \u201cRenewables are working right now. We can\u2019t wait 10 to 20 years for higher cost and risky nuclear energy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600183b6m251pa1rn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stanke and Shackel delivered a parliamentary briefing in Parliament House, Canberra on Wednesday, to politicians and aides across the political spectrum.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht600193b6mj3jeuek0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was unsurprisingly not in attendance, having already labelled his political rival\u2019s nuclear proposal as \u201cmadness\u201d and a \u201cfantasy, dreamed-up to delay real action on climate change.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6001a3b6mm5fzmrdo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stanke says success at the end of the tour this week will be \u201cknowing that I\u2019ve made an impact in not just one person\u2019s lives, but many.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6q5vht6001b3b6mvzuovr21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Albanese will be hoping that not too many Australians are convinced by her argument, which could lead to a change of leadership at a fork in the road that some say could lead to an even warmer planet.    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on cnn.com<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nuclear engineer and former Miss America Grace Stanke has entered the fierce debate in Australia over its future energy policy with a 10-day national tour extolling the benefits of nuclear power in a country where it\u2019s been banned for almost 30 years.
