Global sport\u2019s anti-doping watchdog has slammed as \u201coutrageous\u201d and \u201ccompletely false\u201d allegations that it mishandled a 2021 case in which more than 20 elite Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9100023b6jppuwx3o4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) made the comments after US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) chief Travis Tygart accused the agency and Chinese officials of having \u201cswept these positives under carpet\u201d and failing to follow the rules around drugs in sport.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9200033b6jm3cys4c4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The dispute \u2013 which centers on the extremely&nbsp;sensitive issue of doping in high-level sport \u2013 follows a<em> New York Times <\/em>report that brought to light how 23 Chinese swimmers were cleared to continue competing, including in the Tokyo Olympics later that year, despite the positive test months earlier.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9200043b6jj5zi28cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The report, released in coordination with German public broadcaster ARD, said the athletes who tested positive included nearly half of the swimming team that China sent to the Tokyo Games and that several went on to win medals, including three golds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9200053b6j39kz80yg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            WADA in a statement Saturday said it \u201cstands by the results of its rigorous scientific investigation\u201d into the case and was&nbsp;\u201castonished by the outrageous, completely false and defamatory remarks made by (Tygart), who has made very serious accusations against WADA in connection with the case.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9200063b6j4nfwacpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a statement earlier that day following the publication of media reports, the agency said it had \u201ccarefully reviewed\u201d a decision from Chinese authorities to allow the swimmers to continue to compete after the positive tests and had also responded to subsequent queries about the cases from USADA and the independent International Testing Agency.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9300073b6j6qz50alf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) said recent media reports about the cases were \u201cmisleading,\u201d according to Chinese state agency Xinhua, citing a statement Saturday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9300083b6j2y7d8a50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the statement, CHINADA conducted doping tests at a national swimming event in 2021 and found swimmers testing positive for an \u201cextremely low concentration\u201d of trimetazidine (TMZ), Xinhua said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q9300093b6jdfiynlmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The substance, a heart medication that has been banned by WADA since 2014, affects metabolism and is believed to help with endurance in physical activity. It was thrust into the global spotlight during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics after star Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was handed a four-year ban for a positive test ahead of the event.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000a3b6jyn64v4ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the case of the Chinese swimmers, CHINADA decided the athletes should not be held responsible for the results after its \u201cimmediate\u201d investigation concluded the swimmers were inadvertently exposed to the substance through contamination, its statement said, according to Xinhua.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000b3b6j5r79x57q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its statement Saturday, WADA said it was notified in June 2021 of CHINADA\u2019s ruling on the swimmers who had tested positive earlier that year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000c3b6jyr5we9vg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs part of its review, WADA collected additional, unpublished scientific information on TMZ and consulted with independent scientific experts to test the contamination theory and also whether low doses of TMZ could have benefited the athletes during a swimming competition event,\u201d the agency said in its statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000d3b6jzv1afxxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWADA ultimately concluded that it was not in a position to disprove the possibility that contamination was the source of TMZ and it was compatible with the analytical data in the file,\u201d the statement said, adding that \u201cin all transparency\u201d it shared its findings with internal and external investigators.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000e3b6j8jyhib86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a second statement Saturday, Tygart of the USADA accused WADA and CHINADA of leaving \u201cclean athletes in the dark\u201d by not being transparent about the findings.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000f3b6j1dvkw86z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen you blow away their rhetoric, the facts remain as have been reported: WADA failed to provisionally suspend the athletes, disqualify results, and publicly disclose the positives,\u201d Tygart said in a statement posted on the USADA\u2019s account on social media platform X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000g3b6jgf62uuov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThese are egregious failures even if you buy their story that this was contamination and a potent drug \u2018magically appeared\u2019 in a kitchen and led to 23 positive tests of elite Chinese swimmers,\u201d Tygart said, referencing details included in <em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2019 article citing a report from Chinese investigators.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clv974q93000h3b6jsmyz0e13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its earlier response to Tygart, WADA said it had \u201cno choice but to refer this matter to its legal counsel for further action\u201d following Tygart\u2019s \u201cfalse allegations.\u201d
