Last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced new rules that will require coal-fired power plants to either capture nearly all of their climate pollution or shut down by 2039.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlagy2x00003b6k8lviwsk3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cComing just days after the EPA released proposed new rules that will essentially lead to an accelerated phaseout schedule for most coal plants, this G7 commitment is a further confirmation from the US that coal is on its way out sooner rather than later,\u201d said Katrine Petersen, a senior policy advisor at climate think tank E3G.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvlanyt900023b6kcrjotkds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The commitment is \u201ca major step forward in particular for Japan, as the only G7 country left without a commitment to move away from coal,\u201d Petersen said.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/clvl63xhi00013b6jwi6e4gdh@published\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">            <\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related article<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">Climate change will make you poorer, according to a new report<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5go2200073b6j6uxlrgsh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Many of the other G7 nations already have national plans in place to phase out the fossil fuel. Around 16% of the G7s electricity comes from coal, Ember reports.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5ss1u000s3b6jx2q7sg5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is another nail in the coffin for coal,\u201d&nbsp;said&nbsp;Dave Jones, Ember\u2019s Global Insights program director. \u201cThe journey to phase out coal power has been long: it\u2019s been over seven years since the UK, France, Italy and Canada committed to phase out coal power, so it\u2019s good to see the United States and especially Japan at last be more explicit on their intentions.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5stz2000u3b6jjsjoultc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He warned, however, that while coal power has been falling, gas consumption continues. \u201cCoal might be the dirtiest, but all fossil fuels need to be ultimately phased out,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5nvzw000o3b6j4sf4d0qc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fossil fuels are the main cause of the climate crisis. Almost every country in the world agreed last year to transition away from fossil fuels at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai, but failing to put an end date on coal was seen as a shortcoming of those negotiations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5go2200083b6jyr7hg06b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Energy, environment and climate ministers are meeting in Turin for talks that are expected to end on Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvl5mglk000l3b6jrd0bmpum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The G7 \u2014&nbsp;made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the European Union as a member with special status \u2014&nbsp;typically leads on global climate policy.
