So why does it outsource for processing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfllp3a001j83pd93fg4l2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On delivery day at the Manganese Metal Company\u2019s industrial complex in Mbombela, South Africa, truckloads of manganese ore from the Kalahari Basin in the Northern Cape are ushered inside for processing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ac00093b6jm3ia0tm4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Manganese is commonly found in the Earth\u2019s crust. The mineral is not only known for its nutritional benefits, but it\u2019s critical in the production of steel and batteries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ad000a3b6j2mf3oi1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            South Africa has the world\u2019s largest manganese reserves; however, the International Manganese Institute estimates only 2% of the manganese ore produced within the country is locally processed. The Manganese Metal Company is looking to fill this gap.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ad000b3b6jozongcnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The refinery says it receives about 80,000 metric tons of manganese a year to produce high grade electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) &#8211; one of the critical alloy components to make steel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ad000c3b6j8ecxeke9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The company\u2019s CEO, Louis Nel, says over the last decade it has seen a \u201csignificant\u201d increase in demand for refined manganese in part due to the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EV).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ad000d3b6j08bapwie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWith the growth in EV sales globally, that requires raw materials and batteries. Manganese is a key component in those batteries. So of course, with the uptick in EVs, the raw materials are pulled along,\u201d Nel said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvfmk6te00053b6jsdu0uql8@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"production-challenges\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Production challenges<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ad000f3b6j0rjvioxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most manganese by-products are found within the steel industry. Aloys d\u2019Harambure, the executive director of the International Manganese Institute, says only 2% of manganese is used for batteries, with only 1% of that going toward rechargeable batteries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000g3b6jbm3cg9z6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The International Energy Agency (IEA) found the demand for automotive lithium-ion batteries increased 65% in 2022 due to rising<strong> <\/strong>EV sales. And while there are several ways to create lithium-ion batteries, the chemistry combination of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt oxide (NMC) supplied 60% of the market share, according to the IEA.<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000h3b6jzan3fu0k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Compared to other minerals used to make lithium-ion batteries, Nel says manganese, \u201cprovides some thermal stability to the battery, which is a safety concern\u201d and is more affordable.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000i3b6jsbm28u5z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While the opportunity sounds promising, creating these batteries is no easy feat. \u201cA battery consumes manganese in the form of chemical and that\u2019s where the bottleneck is,\u201d d\u2019Harambure said.<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000j3b6jd7bklj6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He explains manufacturers need to use a high purity manganese sulfate to make the type of battery used in EVs. About 90% of these chemicals are processed in China, he adds, but notes there is a growing push to build chemical processing facilities in other parts of the world.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000k3b6j6zuz4un9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNext year we should see some production in South Africa and in Mexico, and progressively in the US and Australia,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000l3b6jj93y40r0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With an abundance of manganese reserves, South Africa has potential to become a leader in high purity manganese sulfate production, but d\u2019Harambure says \u201cissues with the electricity sector in South Africa\u201d and \u201can increase in electricity prices\u201d have made it difficult to produce manganese chemicals and alloys there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000m3b6j6ggrskac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            D\u2019Harambure adds the country has been slow to open manganese chemical processing facilities due to the lack of local customers that would use the product.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000n3b6jpgb1mfe6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s better to build the manganese chemical facility near the customer because transporting manganese to another country is not extremely expensive \u2013 what is expensive is producing the chemical,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvfmkwcz00083b6js88wgjac@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"green-potential\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Green potential<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000p3b6justpm8zo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            These obstacles are not stopping the Manganese Metal Company from trying to capitalize on the EV boom and expand its processing facilities. The company says it is planning to build a $25 million commercial plant that can produce 5,000 metric tons<strong> <\/strong>of battery-grade manganese sulphate a year. Nel says he\u2019s optimistic it<strong> <\/strong>can complete the build within 18 months and bring products to market by the end of 2026.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000q3b6jumaotxl5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Access to this \u201cstrategic\u201d metal valued by the US and Europe gives Africa advantages, Nel says, adding it will also generate \u201chuge job creation opportunities, as well as economic growth.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000r3b6jwp1hmtfh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Several sectors within the local economy are already reaping the benefits of manganese. According to the International Manganese Institute, the manganese mining industry employed more than 20,000 South Africans in 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000s3b6j7wbu4er7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            D\u2019Harambure also points to a need beyond steel and batteries for the green economy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvfm48ae000t3b6jqcp03wfo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cManganese is essential to producing several other green power technologies including solar panels (and) wind turbines.
