Meanwhile, Boeing\u2019s rival under NASA\u2019s commercial crew program&nbsp;\u2014 SpaceX \u2014 has become the go-to transportation provider for the space agency\u2019s astronauts.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000b3b6izuvyt6mv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now, NASA and Boeing have finally deemed the Starliner spacecraft ready for its ultimate test: allowing astronauts to test-drive the vehicle in outer space.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000c3b6ipy0e32yn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Veteran NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will be on board Monday\u2019s mission, riding Starliner to the International Space Station for a weeklong stay.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000d3b6it3hcpy6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Throughout their flight, Wilmore and Williams will conduct a series of tests, including briefly taking over the controls of the autonomous spacecraft and evaluating how the vehicle operates for astronauts.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000e3b6im4iu8j20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A smooth flight could be a winning moment for Boeing\u2019s spaceflight program and the company overall, which has been in the hotseat due to issues with its commercial airplane division.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000f3b6iu8pg81tp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s what to know about Starliner\u2019s journey before its historic crewed test flight.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvr8tgi2000g3b6ia54jww2v@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-human-component\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    The human component<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000h3b6iqyr2lu0l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Officials at Boeing have sought to make clear that Starliner operates separately from the sector at the company responsible for commercial aircraft. And the Starliner team\u2019s primary interest is in ensuring a smooth test mission and crew safety, according to Mark Nappi, vice president and Starliner program manager at Boeing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000i3b6ihly5wtoa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have humans flying on this vehicle. We always take&nbsp;that so seriously,\u201d Nappi said during a news briefing last week. \u201cI spent my career in this business, and it always has been the top of the list.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000j3b6ijx795j6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The two Starliner astronauts have waited years for the spacecraft to be deemed ready to carry crew. After several astronauts rotated in and out of assignments on Starliner\u2019s Crew Flight Test, Wilmore received his appointment in 2020. NASA moved Williams onto this flight in 2022 after initially assigning her in 2018 to a later Starliner mission.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000l3b6ik71capeb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019ve had a couple (of) launch dates, and we\u2019ve been like, \u2018OK, we\u2019re ready to go,\u2019\u201d Williams said at a Wednesday news conference. \u201cBut now it\u2019s like, heck \u2014 five days. It is actually, finally real, and I sort of have to pinch myself a little bit to understand, actually, we\u2019re going.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000k3b6iakquy74g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At a news briefing last month, Steve Stich, the program manager for NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program, said that NASA required Boeing and SpaceX to meet a certain threshold regarding the risk the mission would result in the death of astronauts \u2014 1 in 270.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8zk1d00013b6itgykw3tl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBoeing exceeds that number with a 1 in 295 loss of crew number,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000m3b6i0jglq1mk@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"starliners-rocky-path\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Starliner\u2019s rocky path<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000n3b6i2g6x9rfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Boeing received a NASA contract to build Starliner in 2014 at the same time the space agency selected SpaceX to build its Crew Dragon capsule.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000o3b6izv6kijz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            NASA gave the companies deals worth up to $6.8 billion combined, hoping that Boeing and SpaceX would both have their capsules ready to fly as soon as 2017.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000p3b6ik33z0ull@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That expectation didn\u2019t pan out.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000q3b6i9zjvb2n3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            SpaceX took longer than planned, flying the inaugural astronaut launch of its Crew Dragon capsule in the summer of 2020. It has since completed 13 missions to orbit for NASA astronauts and paying customers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000r3b6i6j0809ay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Boeing \u2014 despite NASA officials initially believing the Starliner would be ready before SpaceX\u2019s Crew Dragon \u2014 faced years of additional delays, setbacks and added expenses that have cost the company more than $1 billion, according to public financial records.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000s3b6iedi9bncq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Notably, the first Starliner test mission, flown without crew in late 2019, was riddled with missteps. The vehicle misfired in orbit, a symptom of software problems that included a coding error that set an internal clock&nbsp;off by 11 hours.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000t3b6iu3t36htu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A second uncrewed flight test in 2022 uncovered additional software issues and trouble with some of the vehicle\u2019s thrusters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000u3b6iw7q6rmlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those hang-ups delayed the inaugural crewed flight into 2023. But then a new slate of problems arose \u2014 the spacecraft\u2019s parachutes had some components that were weaker than expected, and tape in the vehicle was found to be flammable.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000v3b6ivet71s2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Boeing then had to remove more than a mile\u2019s worth of that tape and complete additional tests of the parachutes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000w3b6iz5qkrj8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Finally, after a decade of development,<strong> <\/strong>NASA and Boeing have cleared the vehicle to fly astronauts.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000x3b6ide31edml@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"everythings-not-going-to-be-absolutely-perfect\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    \u2018Everything\u2019s not going to be absolutely perfect\u2019<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000y3b6i20zehwa1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Williams and Wilmore have taken a measured approach when responding to questions about the Starliner spacecraft\u2019s development woes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi3000z3b6ijsj92nbn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI understand it when you say \u2018setback,\u2019\u201d Wilmore said during the recent news conference. \u201cBut honestly, with all the discovery \u2014 that\u2019s what we would term it \u2014 that we\u2019ve had, it\u2019s been steps forward.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi400103b6ir1noid41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s not been a setback, it\u2019s been pressing forward,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd our families have lived that with us.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi400113b6iabeo5w09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Williams added that she is prepared to go into Monday\u2019s mission with the expectation that small issues may arise.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvr8tgi400123b6iqjqbn464@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe always find stuff, and we are going to continually find stuff,\u201d she said Wednesday. \u201cEverything\u2019s not going to be absolutely perfect as we fly the spacecraft. And that\u2019s really what our goal is.
