{"id":2849,"date":"2024-05-08T11:38:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T11:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/08\/israel-says-rafah-operations-will-go-ahead-as-hamas-deal-remains-far-from-meeting-its-demands\/"},"modified":"2024-05-08T11:38:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T11:38:27","slug":"israel-says-rafah-operations-will-go-ahead-as-hamas-deal-remains-far-from-meeting-its-demands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/08\/israel-says-rafah-operations-will-go-ahead-as-hamas-deal-remains-far-from-meeting-its-demands\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel says Rafah operations will go ahead as Hamas deal remains \u2018far\u2019 from meeting its demands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvd84ps00023d5vsimh7k9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel said the terms of a ceasefire deal Hamas accepted on Monday remained \u201cfar from\u201d meeting its demands and warned its military operations in Rafah would continue, even as it sent negotiators to talk to mediators.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvenquj00063d5vax7s6bur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a statement Monday, Hamas said the head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, told the Qatari prime minister and Egyptian intelligence minister that the militant group had accepted their proposals for a ceasefire and hostage deal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvl6wyp00033d5v6yqbraoc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Palestinians celebrated that statement in the streets of Gaza, while in Tel Aviv, hostage families and their supporters implored Israel\u2019s leaders to accept the deal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvd8ni900043d5vh2dj4bhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, shortly afterwards, Israel said the terms Hamas had accepted were still far from meeting its \u201crequirements,\u201d and reiterated its commitment to an offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, saying its war cabinet had \u201cunanimously decided\u201d to continue with the operation \u201cto exert military pressure on Hamas.\u201d It did agree, though, to send a delegation to the mediators for further talks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvj5xid00003b6j6klszvzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The news comes just hours after Israel ordered Palestinians living in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, to \u201cevacuate immediately.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvj5ytu00023b6j9qkwq5hu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The order raised fears that Israel\u2019s long-threatened assault on the city could be imminent. More than 1 million Palestinians have fled to Rafah, where Hamas is believed to have regrouped after Israel\u2019s destruction of much of the north of Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvktou500023b6jzesbihqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Biden administration remains opposed to Israel going&nbsp;into&nbsp;Rafah,&nbsp;White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvvj7pei000f3b6jnccvboof@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"no-agreement\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    No agreement<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvdqn3l000n3d5v4d5dhu2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ceasefire talks will continue on Tuesday, the&nbsp;Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al-Ansari&nbsp;said in a statement&nbsp;early on Tuesday local time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvk5sq400053b6jb9d5927x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Qatari delegation will head to Cairo on Tuesday morning to continue indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas&nbsp;after Hamas sent a response to mediators involved in the ceasefire proposal which \u201ccan be described as positive,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvk4mpr00033b6j0itsf0u3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Qatari announcement comes amid international calls for an agreement to be reached on a ceasefire and hostage release deal. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on the Israeli government and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire deal after the announcement by Hamas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvfjnio00073b6jj03lfrg5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A senior Israeli and a senior US official said that Hamas had agreed to a framework proposal, which diverges from the one Israel had helped craft with Egypt. The latest proposal calls for an end to the war, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously said he will not accept, the senior American official said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvgryvr000n3b6jeevhqios@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to a press release, Hamas said it would not back down from its demands in the latest proposal, which include a \u201cceasefire, complete withdrawal, dignified exchange, reconstruction, and lifting of the blockade.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvfl7hz00093b6jbgtdhorl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Benny Gantz, a member of Israel\u2019s war cabinet, said Monday there were \u201csignificant gaps\u201d between Israel and Hamas. \u201cDespite this, we continue to turn over every stone and a delegation will go to Cairo.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvcjz5x000j3b6jgvhvemst@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A previous framework, which Israel helped craft but had not fully agreed to, called for the release of between 20 and 33 hostages over several weeks in exchange for a temporary ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv7fqs500093b6i348so9w9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After the initial exchange, according to that framework, there would follow what sources describe as the \u201crestoration of sustainable calm\u201d during which the remaining hostages, captive Israeli soldiers and the bodies of hostages would be exchanged for more Palestinian prisoners.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvbs6td00013b6j36sogzkk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The White House on Monday confirmed that there had \u201cbeen a response from Hamas\u201d to a proposed hostage deal in Israel, and that US President Joe Biden had been briefed on that response, but otherwise declined to weigh in specifically on what a deal could entail.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvbsgc900033b6jthlrr9sp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Biden is \u201caware of where the situation and where the process is,\u201d White House national security spokesman John Kirby told a press briefing. CIA Director Bill Burns remains in the region \u201cworking in real time on the ground,\u201d Kirby added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvvbsrd800053b6j3k8oqufn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe still believe that reaching an agreement is the absolute best outcome not only for the hostages, but for the Palestinian people and we\u2019re not going to stop working to that outcome,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clvv9ykbt000t3d5vq97qqmjo@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"idf-operations-ongoing\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    IDF operations ongoing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv9pnal001k3b6ifg9b0lq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Asked whether Hamas\u2019 acceptance of a deal could change Israel\u2019s plans for Rafah, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the military would continue to operate in Gaza. He said operations are ongoing, but that the IDF is making every effort in the negotiations to bring the hostages home as \u201cfast as possible.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv9kntc001c3b6i601yf4za@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Netanyahu has come under fierce pressure from the more extreme wing of his coalition not to accept the ceasefire proposal outlined last week, and to focus instead on destroying Hamas in Rafah.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv9m5ym001e3b6ipfxjwvfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Orit Strook, Israel\u2019s settlements minister and a member of the far-right Religious Zionism party, said last week that accepting the deal would \u201cthrow\u201d Israel\u2019s military progress \u201cin the trash.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv9nu12001g3b6iz66caec8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel\u2019s national security minister, said Netanyahu had \u201cpromised that Israel would enter Rafah, assured that the war would not end, and pledged that there would be no reckless deal.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clvv9p6zj001i3b6iw1hhuvwe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But large parts of the Israeli public have demanded Netanyahu accept a deal.
