Last week it&nbsp;launched its most surprising operation&nbsp;in two years of war, crossing the northern border in renewed attempts to take Kharkiv, the country\u2019s second most populous city.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwbzu65w000q3b6jfbatoxtf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vovchansk, in the northern Kharkiv region, has faced an onslaught, with Russian forces claiming to control surrounding villages, forcing civilians to flee.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwbzy2tp000u3b6j41sub5p3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It comes as Kyiv\u2019s forces are thinly stretched, with much less artillery than the Russians, inadequate air defenses and a lack of soldiers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwbz8ax900033b6jt6542sym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kuleba described Ukraine\u2019s current position on the frontline as \u201ctough.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwbz8ax900043b6jra7ehhfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cRussia is strong, we are suffering from\u2026 insufficient supplies of military assistance which we are forced to compensate with heroism and sacrifice of our soldiers,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwbz8ax900053b6j7uda2vz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo the main message remains the same: send us everything.
