China\u2019s ruling Communist Party says the self-ruling democracy is part of its territory, despite never having controlled it, and has vowed to take the island, by force if necessary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clween5gj00043b6j9iwxnf3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai used his 30-minute inaugural speech to broadcast a message of peace and declare that a \u201cglorious era of Taiwan\u2019s democracy has arrived,\u201d describing the island as an \u201cimportant link\u201d in a \u201cglobal chain of democracies,\u201d while reiterating a determination to defend its sovereignty.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clweewvmx00083b6jy1nmizbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe future of the Republic of China Taiwan will be decided by its 23 million people. The future we decide is not just the future of our nation, but the future of the world,\u201d Lai said, using the formal name for Taiwan.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe8jpsf00053b6je99lhnxb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai takes up the mantle from his DPP predecessor Tsai Ing-wen, who bolstered the island\u2019s international standing and recognition during her eight years in office. Tsai, Taiwan\u2019s first female president, was unable to stand again because of term limits.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqf00043b6jtk3z7tf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai emerged victorious over rivals in the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party and the Taiwan People\u2019s Party in a January election, which was fought over a mixture of livelihood issues as well as the thorny question of how to deal with its giant one-party state neighbor, China, which under leader Xi Jinping has grown more powerful and bellicose.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg00053b6jpr394y72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Then, voters shrugged off warnings from Beijing that the DPP\u2019s re-election would increase the risk of conflict. The DPP holds the view that Taiwan is a de facto sovereign nation that should bolster defenses against China\u2019s threats and deepen relations with democratic countries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clweexmic000b3b6jjmbkdet7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his inaugural address, Lai called on China \u201cto cease their political and military intimidation against Taiwan, share with Taiwan the global responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as well as the greater region, and ensure the world is free from the fear of war.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg00073b6j4egj7da3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A soft-spoken political veteran, Lai hails from a more radical wing of the DPP, and was once an open supporter of Taiwan independence \u2013 a red line for Beijing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg00083b6j8e4sm5y9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Though his views have tempered since then, China never forgave him for his comments from six years ago, in which he described himself as a \u201cpractical worker for Taiwan independence.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg000a3b6jmbe9gkk9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai has now said he favors the current status quo, proclaiming that \u201cTaiwan is already an independent sovereign country\u201d so there is \u201cno plan or need\u201d to declare independence, in a deliberately nuanced stance that mimics the one held by outgoing Tsai.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clweoihjv00033b6jyhlw2cam@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When asked about Lai\u2019s inauguration in a regular briefing Monday, a spokesperson for China\u2019s Foreign Ministry said \u201cTaiwan independence is a dead end. No matter what pretext or banner one uses, promoting Taiwan independence and secession is doomed to fail.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwebd0m5000a3b6jly90mt7a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai\u2019s inauguration ceremony was attended by national leaders from a handful of countries with which Taiwan still maintains formal diplomatic ties, several former American officials, and lawmakers from other countries, according to Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwed1p4800003b6jjxoui72m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered his congratulations to Lai and \u201cthe Taiwan people for once again demonstrating the strength of their robust and resilient democratic system.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwed7cso00023b6jnwffw5cp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe look forward to working with President Lai and across Taiwan\u2019s political spectrum to advance our shared interests and values, deepen our longstanding unofficial relationship, and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,\u201d Blinken said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clweb8mh100063b6j3wqg5bfr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"frictions-with-beijing\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Frictions with Beijing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwef4pyi000h3b6jae1ljvg1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai takes office during a particularly contentious period between Taiwan and China, which in recent years has ramped up diplomatic, economic and military pressure on the self-governing democracy as Taiwan\u2019s leaders tightened informal ties with Washington.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwef1u8s000f3b6ju93ppap8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his inaugural address, Lai said he hoped China would \u201cface the reality of the Republic of China\u2019s existence, respect the choices of the people of Taiwan,\u201d and \u201cengage in cooperation with the legal government chosen by Taiwan\u2019s people.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwef7p56000k3b6jvehdygmq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He called for the resumption of tourism on a reciprocal basis and enrollment of degree students in Taiwanese institutions as steps to \u201cpursue peace and mutual prosperity.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwef9srx000m3b6jqe8wiggf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the new president also warned against harboring delusions, even as Taiwan pursues \u201cthe ideals of peace.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clweg71oh000y3b6j1rveizd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo long as China refuses to renounce the use of force against Taiwan, all of us in Taiwan ought to understand, that even if we accept the entirety of China\u2019s position and give up our sovereignty, China\u2019s ambition to annex Taiwan will not simply disappear,\u201d Lai said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg00093b6jbgd2yccl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Beijing has sought to portray Lai as inciting conflict, repeatedly framing the elections earlier this year as a choice between \u201cpeace and war.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwebkbke000c3b6jaazvbj50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Monday, China\u2019s Taiwan Affairs Office reiterated that rhetoric, slamming \u201cthe leader of the Taiwan region\u201d as \u201csending dangerous signals of seeking independence, provocations and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg000c3b6jmuj3hiwc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Xi has placed \u201creunification\u201d with Taiwan as a key part of his goal to achieve China\u2019s \u201cnatural rejuvenation.\u201d But under the strongarm tactics of his more than one decade in power, Taiwan\u2019s public has shifted determinedly away from China. Less than 10% now support an immediate or eventual unification, and less than 3% identify primarily as Chinese.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe6slqg000d3b6jzw02bcol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The majority of Taiwanese want to maintain the current status quo and show no desire to be ruled by Beijing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwebsxu0000j3b6je69m7fdw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Beijing has cut official contact with Taipei since Tsai took office. Unlike the opposition KMT, Tsai and the DPP refused to endorse the so-called \u201c1992 consensus\u201d that both Taiwan and the mainland belong to \u201cone China,\u201d but with different interpretations of what that means. Beijing, which deems the tacit agreement a precondition for dialogue.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwe8l76g000b3b6jn6cayc0l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Official communication between Beijing and Taipei&nbsp;is unlikely to resume as Lai takes office \u2013 with China repeatedly rebuking his offer for talks and denouncing him as a dangerous separatist.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwebu3qt000p3b6jttm92uqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lai is also set to face challenges \u2013 and scrutiny \u2013 in pushing through his agenda for Taiwan in parliament during his term.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwebu5io000r3b6jejye3tjz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Unlike his predecessor, Lai will not have a parliamentary majority in the next four years.
