I believe that the First Amendment protected that activity\u2026 I believe the First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in contradiction with each other, but I accept that it would be difficult to win such a case given all these circumstances.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxv6ppa7000b3b6j00t3wsz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In her sentencing, the judge said Assange was entitled to a credit of time served for his incarceration at a British prison.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxv6v6e9000d3b6j1yvpwyy3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt appears that your 62 months imprisonment is fair and reasonable,\u201d Manglona said. \u201cYou will be able to walk out of this courtroom a free man. I hope there will be some peace restored.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxv8rrnz000z3b6jha8m0ecx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The judge told Assange that \u201ctiming matters\u201d and she would have been less inclined to accept a plea 10 years ago. She also said there was no personal victim in this case \u2014 Assange\u2019s action did not lead to any known physical injury.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxv8smvv00113b6jt3eukkm2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For years, the US argued that the self-appointed champion of free speech endangered lives and posed a threat to national security.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxvbhluv00153b6jzo82tkaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Following his release, the US Department of Justice said in a statement that Assange is barred from returning to the US without permission, \u201cpursuant to the plea agreement.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxumdh9d000b3b6h7frntiu7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Assange and his whistleblower website rose to global prominence in 2010 after a string of leaks from former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxumi82c000l3b6hoeg77qtj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The website posted a video showing a US military helicopter firing on and killing two journalists and several Iraqi civilians in 2007.
