{"id":4603,"date":"2024-07-02T11:37:53","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T11:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/02\/french-voters-head-to-polls-in-first-round-of-snap-parliamentary-elections\/"},"modified":"2024-07-02T11:37:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T11:37:53","slug":"french-voters-head-to-polls-in-first-round-of-snap-parliamentary-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/02\/french-voters-head-to-polls-in-first-round-of-snap-parliamentary-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"French voters head to polls in first round of snap parliamentary elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeucoc000m5mp43x4e387c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Polls have opened for the first round of France\u2019s snap parliamentary election, which could oust President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s centrist alliance and leave him to see out the remaining three years of his term in an awkward partnership with the far right.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3h00023b6jxi92nntq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Voting began at 8 a.m. local time (2 a.m. ET), as France started the process of electing the 577 members of its National Assembly through locally fought contests across the country and in its overseas territories.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00033b6jn0od2mml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The election is being held three years earlier than it needed to be, and three weeks after Macron\u2019s Renaissance party was trounced by the far-right National Rally (RN), the party of Marine Le Pen, in the European Parliament elections.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00043b6jnq9dgmhb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Minutes after the humiliating defeat, in an apparent attempt to call voters\u2019 bluff, Macron said he could not ignore the message sent by voters and took the \u201cserious, heavy\u201d decision to call a snap election \u2013 France\u2019s first since 1997.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxft02z00033b6jyz9w1puf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Whatever the outcome, Macron has pledged to remain in post until France\u2019s next presidential election in 2027.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00053b6jb4gu0u0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The National Assembly is responsible for passing domestic laws \u2013 from pensions and taxation to immigration and education \u2013 while the president determines the country\u2019s foreign, Europe and defense policy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00063b6jqo9xkz3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When the president and majority in parliament belong to the same party, things run well. When they don\u2019t, the government can grind to a halt \u2013 a prospect that could haunt Paris as it prepares to host the summer Olympics next month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxfu56p00053b6jo1civgvq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            France most recently had such a government \u2013 known as \u201ccohabitation\u201d &#8211; when right-wing President Jacques Chirac called snap polls and was forced to appoint a socialist, Lionel Jospin, as prime minister, who stayed in the post for five years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00073b6j8credoet@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first round of votes eliminates weaker candidates ahead of the second round next Sunday. If a candidate wins an absolute majority of votes in the first ballot on a 25% turnout, they win the seat. Typically, only a handful of deputies will be elected this way \u2013 but most will go to a second round.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00083b6jokeuhr9j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Only those who win more than 12.5% of ballots cast by registered voters are allowed to stand in the second round. Often this is fought between two candidates, but sometimes three or four. Some candidates choose to drop out at this stage to give their allies a better chance of victory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i00093b6jn2ob67y0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most voters will choose one of three blocs: the RN-led far-right alliance; the New Popular Front (NFP), a recently formed left-wing coalition; and Macron\u2019s centrist Ensemble.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i000a3b6jr4wg8qy6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The RN bloc is headed by Jordan Bardella, the 28-year-old party leader handpicked by Le Pen, who has striven to polish the image of a party historically ridden with racism and antisemitism that proliferated under the decades-long leadership of her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i000b3b6jpw139at7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Until recently, the prospect of a far-right government was unthinkable. In the past, opposition parties have made marriages of convenience in an attempt to block the RN \u2013 under its previous name, the National Front \u2013 from entering government. Now, within a couple of weeks, Bardella could become France\u2019s prime minister \u2013 and Europe\u2019s youngest in more than two centuries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i000c3b6jnp386o6v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the left, a previously fractious cluster of parties have recently banded together to form the New Popular Front \u2013 a coalition meant to resurrect the original Popular Front that prevented fascists from gaining power in 1936. The broad alliance comprises more radical figures like Jean-Luc Melenchon, three-time presidential candidate and leader of the France Unbowed party, as well as moderate leaders like Place Publique\u2019s Raphael Glucksmann.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxxeum3i000d3b6jtx8000ub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meanwhile, outgoing French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal \u2013 who was only appointed to his post by Macron in January \u2013 is representing Macron\u2019s centrist Ensemble alliance.
