Iran has claimed that the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this week was carried out by a \u201cshort-range projectile\u201d and a \u201csevere explosion\u201d outside a guest house where he was staying. <\/p>\n
The death of the Hamas leader further heightened tensions at an already volatile time, raising fears that Israel\u2019s conflict with Hamas and its allies could develop into a multi-front, fully-fledged war in the Middle East. <\/p>\n
The Iranian government and Hamas say that Israel carried out the assassination. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement. <\/p>\n
On Saturday, Iran warned that \u201cblood vengeance\u201d for the killing was \u201ccertain.\u201d <\/p>\n
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed in a statement that the short-range projectile that reportedly killed Haniyeh had a warhead of about seven kilograms, based on \u201cinvestigations and research conducted.\u201d <\/p>\n
US officials were briefed on the operation by Israeli officials only after the assassination, the source said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis action was planned and executed by the Zionist regime with the support of the criminal American government,\u201d the IRGC alleged. Iran calls Israel the Zionist regime. <\/p>\n
Israel \u201cwill decisively receive the response to this crime,\u201d which is a \u201csevere punishment\u201d that will come at \u201can appropriate time, place, and manner,\u201d the IRGC said. <\/p>\n
The chief spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said Thursday that Israel is on \u201chigh alert\u201d for both defensive and offensive military action. <\/p>\n
\u201cIDF forces are deployed in the air, at sea and on the ground, and are prepared for all scenarios, especially for offensive plans within the immediate timeframe,\u201d Hagari said. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
