In Cape Town, South Africa, thousands were&nbsp;displaced by torrential rain, gale-force winds, flooding&nbsp;and more. A fatal landslide hit Indonesia\u2019s Sulawesi island.&nbsp;Beryl left a massive path of destruction&nbsp;as it set the record for the&nbsp;earliest Category 4 hurricane. And Japanese authorities said&nbsp;more than 120 people died in record heat in Tokyo.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla5fox000u3b6j7qj01wrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those hot temperatures have been especially merciless.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla5fox000v3b6jf1262bd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The globe for July 2024 averaged 62.4 degrees Fahrenheit (16.91 degrees Celsius), which is 1.2 degrees (0.68 Celsius) above the 30-year average for the month, according to Copernicus. Temperatures were a small fraction lower than the same period last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla5tfp000x3b6jihzja222@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is the&nbsp;second-warmest July and second-warmest of any month&nbsp;recorded in the agency\u2019s records, behind only July 2023. The Earth also had its&nbsp;two hottest days on record, on July 22 and July 23, each averaging about 62.9 degrees Fahrenheit (17.16 degrees Celsius).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla7tvl000z3b6jwctmb9bi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During July, the world was 1.48 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer, by Copernicus\u2019 measurement, than pre-industrial times. That\u2019s close to the warming limit that nearly all the countries in the world agreed to in the 2015 Paris climate agreement:&nbsp;1.5 degrees.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla7tvl00103b6juaq0mc1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            El Nino \u2014 which naturally warms the Pacific Ocean and changes weather across the globe \u2014 spurred the 13 months of record heat, said Copernicus senior climate scientist Julien Nicolas. That has come to a close, hence July\u2019s slight easing of temperatures. La Nina conditions \u2014 natural cooling \u2014 aren\u2019t expected until later in the year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla89qm00123b6jx220vg8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But there\u2019s&nbsp;still a general trend of warming.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla8r8300143b6jja4h7oyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe global picture is not that much different from where we were a year ago,\u201d Nicolas said in an interview.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla8r8300153b6j484sotki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe fact that the global sea surface temperature is and has been at record or near record levels for the past more than a year now has been an important contributing factor,\u201d he said. \u201cThe main driving force, driving actor behind this record temperature is also the long-term warming trend that is directly related to buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla8r8300163b6jlsxuf6zh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That includes carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla8x6v00183b6js3emvn94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            July\u2019s temperatures hit certain regions especially hard, including western Canada and the western United States. They baked, with around&nbsp;one-third of the US population under warnings&nbsp;at one point for dangerous and record-breaking heat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla99sz001a3b6jxoo7h4ja@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In southern and eastern Europe, the&nbsp;Italian health ministry issued its most severe heat warning&nbsp;for several cities in southern Europe and the Balkans.&nbsp;Greece was forced to close&nbsp;its biggest cultural attraction, the Acropolis, due to excessive temperatures. A majority of France was under heat warnings&nbsp;as the country welcomed the Olympics&nbsp;in late July.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla99sz001b3b6jb2p1dp9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Also affected were most of Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and eastern Antarctica, according to Copernicus. Temperatures in Antarctica were well above average, the scientists say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla99sz001c3b6jkm4x9e9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThings are going to continue to get worse because we haven\u2019t stopped doing the thing that\u2019s making them worse,\u201d said Gavin Schmidt, climatologist and director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, who wasn\u2019t part of the report.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla99sz001d3b6jkzm4f6mq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Schmidt noted that different methodologies or calculations could produce slightly different results, including that July may have even continued the streak. The primary takeaway, he said: \u201cEven if the record-breaking streak comes to an end, the forces that are pushing the temperatures higher, they\u2019re not stopping.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla99sz001e3b6j5ajmrbyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDoes it matter that July is a record or not a record? No, because the thing that matters, the thing that is impacting everybody,\u201d Schmidt added, \u201cis the fact that the temperatures this year and last year are still much, much warmer than they were in the 1980s, than they were pre-industrial. And we\u2019re seeing the impacts of that change.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzla9tve001g3b6j6b8e4szi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People across the globe shouldn\u2019t see relief in July\u2019s numbers, the experts say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzlabdpp001i3b6j0wcleonj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of attention given to this 13-month streak of global records,\u201d said Copernicus\u2019 Nicolas. \u201cBut the consequences of climate change have been seen for many years.
