Her eldest sister passed away from the disease when she was just 4 years old. Kilenga herself was told that she would not live beyond her 8th birthday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhogl8u00033b6kbradzgcn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sickle cell is an inherited and debilitating blood disorder that causes normal round red blood cells \u2013 which carry oxygen through the body \u2013 to become crescent-shaped and rigid. These misshapen cells can block blood flow to vital organs and lead to serious complications, including stroke, blood clots, anemia, and bouts of extreme pain.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhogl8u00043b6kl8k21cot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cYou\u2019re frequently in pain. And they say by the time you\u2019re 40 you have at least one organ that is extensively damaged,\u201d said Kilenga, who grew up in Taveta, Kenya. \u201c(The disease) is something that I would not wish for anyone.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhogl8u00053b6kowcwcify@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Of the 120 million people worldwide living with sickle cell, more than 66% are in Africa. Despite the prevalence, treatment to relieve pain and prevent complications is difficult to secure, and stigma against the disease is widespread, even associated with witchcraft in rural areas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhogl8u00063b6kgpyeh6ym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSickle cell affects more lower resource communities where there\u2019s a large financial burden to access medicine and health care,\u201d Kilenga said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhogl8u00073b6k8strlfqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kilenga has fought her whole life to overcome the challenges of living with the disease, and she is on a mission to help thousands of other sickle cell patients get the medical care they need to lead fulfilling lives. Through her nonprofit, Africa Sickle Cell Organization, she is breaking down stigmas and bringing treatment that was once only available in wealthy Western countries to sub-Saharan Africa.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzhoh7os000e3b6kiqm8149h@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"growing-up-with-sickle-cell\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Growing up with sickle cell<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhohj89000g3b6kdri3rly4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As a child, Kilenga was ostracized for having sickle cell. It was how we grew up.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhohsev000j3b6kiq4ymym2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After graduating from university, Kilenga decided to travel the country taking photographs of people with sickle cell and interviewing them and their families about their struggles with it. Initially, she planned to photograph and interview 10,000 people. But after the horrors she encountered on the project, she stopped at 400.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhohsev000k3b6k5y6xm9ct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She found sick children locked in rooms, crying incessantly for help yet ignored by family members who had no idea what to do. Kilenga said so many families had no understanding of how to care for their sick children and thought it would be better to let them die. The people she met throughout Kenya didn\u2019t have access to any medical care or pain management. There were 4-year-old children who looked 1 year old because of poor growth development from a lack of treatment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhohsev000l3b6kr2w4vr6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen I went on the ground, the reality was worse than I could have imagined,\u201d Kilenga said. \u201cI could no longer do it because it was just so sad. I decided I had to share this pain with someone who could do something about it.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzhohwas000n3b6kb61b450i@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"creating-a-new-normal\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Creating a new normal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoi649000p3b6kda9e7y3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kilenga contacted the Director of Noncommunicable Diseases at Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000r3b6kha7xd54y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI met with him. He was a lovely gentleman. He told me he was inspired by the photographs and the stories and we should plan a time where we can speak more about it,\u201d Kilenga said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000s3b6k6q32i3tx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She waited one month, two months, three months, and never heard back. She tried calling his office, emailing, and got no response. So, she began to email him a daily portrait and story of someone living with sickle cell from her project.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000t3b6klljit3rd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That got his attention. Finally, he responded, and together they worked to raise $20,000 to form a set of national guidelines in Kenya for the management and control of sickle cell disease.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000u3b6k3b54zdcq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yet with health care in Kenya decentralized and delegated to the county governments, to really affect change for people with sickle cell, she was advised by the Ministry to start in one part of the country that had a budget to implement sickle cell care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000v3b6knngoino7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2017, Kilenga moved from Nairobi to a small village in the southern part of Taita-Taveta County. The area is plagued by a lack of access to clean water, food, health care, and education. There is also an alarmingly high prevalence of sickle cell in the region.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoie1w000w3b6kaacvjjor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That year, Kilenga started Africa Sickle Cell Organization and has since helped 500,000 people. Then they place them in care and link them with the closest sickle cell facility.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoj68500123b6katr28guu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She and her group work in tandem with the government, outside organizations, and funders to sustain and create clinics that specialize in sickle cell maintenance and treatment. They identify providers who can plug in the gaps in care and financing to expand access for patients.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoj68500133b6k7n40emj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re talking about inpatient and outpatient care, meaning when they are hospitalized everything is covered,\u201d Kilenga said. \u201cClinics, labs, medicines, and anything else healthcare providers are giving are covered by the package.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoj68500143b6kekwgccjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The organization currently supports four clinics in Kenya that serve 2,000 patients, Kilenga said. Patients usually come once a week or twice a month to see clinicians, get diagnostics, and monitor blood levels.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clzk72u3y00003b6kc9yejs8h@published\" class=\"image_large image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"frame_4337_PS (1).jpeg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-resizes=\"\" data-breakpoints=\"{&quot;image_large--eq-extra-small&quot;: 115, &quot;image_large--eq-small&quot;: 300}\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6054022313564298\" data-original-height=\"1031\" data-original-width=\"1703\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/frame-4337-ps-1.jpeg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{&quot;image_large--eq-extra-small&quot;: 115, &quot;image_large--eq-small&quot;: 300, &quot;image_large--show-credits&quot;: 525}\">           <\/div>\n<div class=\"image_large__metadata\">\n<div class=\"image_large__caption attribution\">    <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\">Africa Sickle Cell Organization helps patients access quality, affordable treatment.<\/span>  <\/div><figcaption class=\"image_large__credit\">CNN<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoj68500153b6k780qkz4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After six months in treatment, patients are enrolled in the organization\u2019s program to support their livelihood, such as raising goats and chickens.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhoj68500163b6kcw611abx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat I\u2019ve realized is you can give people medicines and access to care, and you can educate them all that you want,\u201d Kilenga said. \u201cBut if they don\u2019t have the basics like food, clean water, shelter, then you will not realize the outcomes that you want for them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzhoj8yc00183b6ko5gstamp@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"opening-hearts-and-minds\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Opening hearts and minds<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhojj1u001a3b6kj5p9gyka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kilenga is also focused on creating community awareness to help end the stigma of sickle cell.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhojrkw001c3b6ku9a22zty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn most communities, when your children have sickle cell, most blame the woman \u2026 and the woman is abandoned and left to (take) care of the children. And the community stigmatizes them to a point that they are so poor and destitute that they cannot ask for a job, or ask for help, because they have been shunned by their families,\u201d Kilenga said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhojrkw001d3b6k7mf1paa6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kilenga travels to villages and speaks with village elders, chiefs, parents, and community members to educate them about sickle cell.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhojrkw001e3b6kyg5t562m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s an interactive session. I think this is one of the biggest tools that we use for elimination of stigma and education around sickle cell in communities,\u201d Kilenga said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzhojrkw001f3b6kcm00jv4v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThose with sickle cell have been neglected, and I think this neglect has made them think that they don\u2019t deserve good things. I need them to know that sickle cell is not just what they are.
