They beat me with their guns. They kicked me. But this time, the ethnic Rakhine rebel group Arakan Army is being blamed for the brutality.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm0dfwcqa001i3b6kbabj6f73@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"it-felt-like-the-end-of-the-world\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018It felt like the end of the world\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000e3b6kelb3tx28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Witnesses say the deadliest day for attacks&nbsp;was August 5, when an estimated 200 people were killed as drones rained down bombs on those fleeing fighting in the town of Maungdaw.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000f3b6kbuyu6ose@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Videos circulated widely online show piles of bodies \u2013 mostly women and children surrounded by their belongings \u2013 scattered around a mangrove forest along the shoreline, slaughtered as they tried to board boats to Bangladesh.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000g3b6kvvrq0382@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Abdul Bashar, a 48-year-old father who survived the drone attacks, says they took place around 6 p.m. that day.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000h3b6k6z6h2pkz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen we reached the border fence, we saw a large bomb fall on a group of people, killing many of them,\u201d he says. \u201cThey were attacking with drones, gunfire, and heavy weapons. It felt like the end of the world.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000i3b6kfnnyrm7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bashar saw his 17-year-old son die, along with his sister, who was killed as she breastfed her 8-month-old daughter.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000j3b6kkyer5xjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI couldn\u2019t look back because bombs were falling heavily,\u201d he said. \u201cI had two of my children with me, and I was bleeding.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000k3b6kw5bx8e61@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bashar is now sheltering in a Cox\u2019s Bazar camp with his 10-year-old nephew \u2013 whose parents and five siblings died in the attack. The boy survived despite severe shrapnel wounds to his arm.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000l3b6k5twke9ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel that death would be better than living through this,\u201d Bashar said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000m3b6kszrri7un@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A new report from human rights group Fortify Rights urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to&nbsp;\u201cinvestigate a massacre of Rohingya civilians perpetrated by the Arakan Army (AA).\u201d&nbsp;A separate report from Human Rights Watch says the attacks \u201craise the specter of ethnic cleansing.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfxlkq001n3b6k9833v6f5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said AA fighters had \u201cnever targeted or killed innocent civilians,\u201d claiming the August 5 drone attacks were carried out by the military.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000o3b6kb5m82pbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In response to a separate question about Hamida\u2019s testimony of gang rape, the AA\u2019s Khaing Thu Ka said the group would \u201ccertainly investigate\u201d her case.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000p3b6kvc5gbhcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Rohingya people \u2013 a largely Muslim ethnic group with a distinct language and culture \u2013 have long been persecuted and denied citizenship in majority-Buddhist Myanmar, with official propaganda describing them as \u201cBengalis\u201d or \u201cillegal immigrants.\u201d They are also denied official status in Bangladesh, making them known as \u201cthe world\u2019s most unwanted people.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vp000q3b6kc3j1vyz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bangladesh\u2019s new interim chief Muhammad Yunus has promised to continue supporting the Rohingya in his country, but has appealed for the fighting in Myanmar to end so they can return to their homeland with \u201csafety, dignity and full rights.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm0dfxqt6001p3b6kcmv7p2xq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"overnight-exodus\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Overnight exodus<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" Many refugee boats have sunk in recent weeks, the bodies of their desperate passengers&nbsp;eventually washing ashore and buried in shallow graves on the beach.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vq000y3b6k0gn1dryr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Compounding Mohammed\u2019s&nbsp;fears are the pre-dawn sounds of explosions and rifle fire just across the river \u2013 a reminder of why his sister and other Rohingya are fleeing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vq000z3b6klvnhzi9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the Bangladesh side, it has become a game of cat and mouse for the coast guard to spot boats emerging from the inky waters before they make it onto land. The full moon casts a silver glow over the river, putting incoming boats in extra danger of being spotted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vq00113b6k99cjxw13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mohammed\u2019s sister never appears that night, and by dawn, his panic starts to rise.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vq00123b6kjmox5aka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe world is now dark for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI lost everything \u2026 in my life.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0dfv5vq00133b6kjxjan9jn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hours later, he hears that his sister made it to land further up the coast \u2013 but was kidnapped by brokers demanding payment for her release.
