His vehicle, known as a&nbsp;\u2018vahana,\u2019 is the large Indian bandicoot rat, another symbol of Ganesha\u2019s ability to overcome anything.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm17i198b000b3b6kuhgziis3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ganesh Chaturthi falls each year in late summer, during the Bhadra month in the Hindu calendar, and marks a celebratory time of year when families gather. It began this year on September 7 and concluded on Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm17i198b000c3b6kxyzc9unl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It began with worshippers placing idols of Ganesha,&nbsp;anointed with red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers,&nbsp;on raised platforms in their homes and in outdoor public spaces. Devotees then perform special prayers and chant hymns as part of the rituals seeking his blessings.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm17i198b000d3b6k3vyts0u5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ganesha\u2019s favorite foods \u2013 coconut, jaggery (a type of sugar), and modak (sweet dumplings) \u2013 are offered to him as gifts.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm17i198b000e3b6k4j1cd288@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As the festival ends, the Ganesha idols&nbsp;are carried to local bodies of water in a parade where they are then immersed in water.
