Their beams reveal not just a section of tarmac ahead, but one of Ukraine\u2019s most top-secret weapons, controlled by its most clandestine agency.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z2uv1w000c3b6mu6eixek4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stuck to the nose of the gray machine is a yellow emblem of an owl, wings spread and grasping a sword \u2013 the unmistakable logo of Ukraine\u2019s defense intelligence, the GUR.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z2uv1w000d3b6m3mxxh7li@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Two pilots sporting the same owl patches on their fatigues make their final checks inside the car before a thumbs up: \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z2uv1w000e3b6myio4xq5z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A high-speed, 50-second chase ensues, before the 13-foot long, 23-foot wingspan AN-196 <em>Liutyi <\/em>drone disappears in an instant into the inky-black Ukrainian night.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z2uv1w000f3b6mord7m82j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The drone\u2019s destination is a target deep inside Russian territory.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm21ng13t00033b6nw8f7zj4p@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">CNN<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z2va5w000m3b6mdkak2mzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Only two people were authorized to speak on the record, and then only using their callsigns: Serge, the long-range drone operations commander of GUR, and Vector, unit commander. Serge said he had personally overseen more than 500 long-range drone attacks into Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z32012000v3b6mj6rv91me@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their target: an ammunition facility, specifically train carriages sitting inside the depot loaded with recently delivered Iranian missiles, according to the Ukrainians.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z33caa00103b6m477otihu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The facility sits on the outskirts of the tiny village of Kotluban, in the Volgograd region of southwestern Russia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z33b1l000y3b6miwfb57ag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Long-range drone attacks have become an increasingly prominent part of the Russia-Ukraine war. As the land war has become more attritional, the air war has gathered speed, with the major development being in drone warfare.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z34lo100173b6mnbjawyun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In September, the unit\u2019s drones hit a Russian ammunition depot between Moscow and St. Petersburg, in Tver region. The attack on Toropets, the Ukrainians claimed, resulted in the destruction of a depot storing Iskander tactical missiles, as well as aerial glide bombs and artillery munition. The strike caused massive explosions, visible for miles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z35bru001c3b6m21njxv5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And in July the Ukrainians say they hit an oil refinery on Russia\u2019s Black Sea coast, causing a major fire there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z34wo1001a3b6muubha1ch@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned, however, that Moscow would consider any assault on it supported by a nuclear power to be a joint attack, singling out a mass launching of drones as one potential example.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z35zd8001i3b6mj2oqu4gs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vector said many of Russia\u2019s airfields, the origin-point of many of the air raids it conducts against Ukraine, are out of range. His drones, while highly effective, are not always that efficient \u2013 swarms of them are required to ensure their targets are hit. \u201cOf course, we can send the UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), and we destroyed many places. But it\u2019s not enough,\u201d Vector says.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm20b92lk00573b6m33d16383@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20240925-ukraine-long-range-drones\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20240925-ukraine-long-range-drones\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20240925-ukraine-long-range-drones\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20240925-ukraine-long-range-drones\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z35m66001g3b6mrrmixgjr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re not asking only about the permission to send the missiles anywhere in Russia, we speak about the weapons which can help us to move this war from our territory,\u201d Vector adds.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1z372dw001s3b6msgvg0i9u@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"inside-the-mission\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Inside the mission<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z36wm6001p3b6mjqpxsl94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Serge and Vector have been leading their unit\u2019s attempts to hurt Putin at home.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z36clx001m3b6mgz5ynllw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Regardless of targets, their missions follow a rigid set of operating procedures that include meetings at various locations across Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z37aji001v3b6mjby1bel5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In an underground office with dark brown, seemingly never-ending Soviet corridors, Serge sits across from Vector in a white-walled room. No pictures hang on the wall, even the whiteboard remains blank. The meeting is to the point.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z37w7300203b6mcb96tdkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere will be about 12 drones,\u201d Serge says to Vector, who has a map in front of him detailing the target and range of the Russian air defense and electronic warfare systems.&nbsp; They then agree the target approach time of around 3 am and the launch intervals for the drones.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z37w7300213b6mtb53dddj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vector scribbles two notes before standing abruptly and saying, \u201cEverything is clear. Ready to complete the task.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z38c6p00263b6mtqoahff3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As dusk draws in, the convoy pulls into a compound, articulated lorries lined up. A tiny room with a desk and two sets of bunk beds serves as the only light source for miles around.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z38c6p00273b6me1cpsv6t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Men dressed in black, balaclavas over their faces, wait to hear their orders. Vector delivers a short brief, adding that this mission will also involve other units. He orders his men to start preparing the routes and hands over a small USB key containing the information for the mission ahead.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z38c6p00283b6mb4n2j9rk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAny questions?\u201d he asks. \u201cNone? Okay. Let\u2019s get working.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z39302002g3b6mzjeqc263@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He points to the quality of Russia\u2019s air defenses, especially over the past 12 months. \u201cWe\u2019re successful guys and we find the windows,\u201d he says, but it\u2019s a challenge.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z39302002h3b6mfpu94lhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Each drone will be programmed with more than 1,000 different waypoints, to evade Russia\u2019s comprehensive air defense systems. There is tacit acceptance from Vector that some of this resembles a video game.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z39302002i3b6m71gzecmv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt looks like we play with them,\u201d Vector says jokingly, \u201cbut it\u2019s not a game. It\u2019s a war.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z39302002j3b6mkhpc2pf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Serge adds that not all men in his unit are career soldiers like him. He has served more than 20 years in the Ukrainian army and began flying drone missions in 2014 as Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine\u2019s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions split away from Kyiv.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1z397al002l3b6m9k5yzs37@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"decoy-machines\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Decoy machines<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z38qqj002e3b6mqxmmvg3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a warehouse, a Liutyi drone, produced predominantly in Ukraine, wingless for the time being, stands surrounded by green camouflage-painted crates containing multiple Rubaka kamikaze drones.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3bb1y002r3b6m30zyk2jd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vector explains that these smaller drones are crucial to the success of any mission. The aim is simple: to overwhelm the air defenses and draw Russian fire away from the Liutyi, which often carries a payload as great as 250 kilograms (550 pounds).    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm20bx95s00073b6npwdu1jub@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">CNN<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3brfr002w3b6m9xk0xrda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey\u2019re very simple, and we can use them with and without payloads,\u201d he says of the smaller drones.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3brfr002x3b6md2l23qwg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cracking open one of the crates, he pulls out one of the decoy machines. Strips of metal foil have been added to the wings to fool Russian radar.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3brfr002y3b6mxua396fh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe try to mix them, and we try to send them from different distances, different launch places\u2026 they try to destroy them. They send helicopters and missiles, they turn on the radio electronic warfare,\u201d Vector explains.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3brfr002z3b6mzti6ea9b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their targets are only military targets, Vector states. \u201cRussia came inside our country. They destroyed a lot of electricity, a lot of houses, cities, villages.\u201d But, he adds, \u201cnot all of them are stupid, and when they understand that war can come to them like they come to us, they will change something in their country. They will change the politics.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3bwco00323b6myom1spfk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of the many articulated lorries has backed up for loading. In near darkness, drone bodies, followed by wings, are loaded three per truck by men whose faces are totally covered by balaclavas, and strapped down, ready to be taken to their launch sites.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3cnmf00353b6muzz0ll63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Across other parts of Ukraine roughly 80 other GUR operatives are preparing 90 other drones, not all the Liutyi, for flight.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3d9zu003a3b6mogo038yj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some 30% of all the drones being launched will be on decoy missions, Serge says. The drones have been programmed to fly anywhere between 450 and 550 miles, with the Liutyis being the spearhead, destined for the small town-turned-ammunition hub of Kotluban.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3d9zu003b3b6mmp08bflv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The men load the warheads carefully into the bodies of the drones. Each compartment is then sealed with the squeal of a drill.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3d9zu003c3b6mbwy114z0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Serge and Vector, now in full combat uniform, observe the final preparations. This launch is one of the largest Serge has ever conducted, he says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3d9zu003d3b6mf4nppy63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMaybe (the Russian people) don\u2019t understand what\u2019s going on in Ukraine, but when these UAVs arrive, they understand clearly what we have been living (with) for the past 10 years,\u201d Vector chimes in.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1z3dfuc003i3b6mww6a9tqq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"tracking-the-drones-flight\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Tracking the drones\u2019 flight<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1z3cvtg00383b6msmakj3qe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In total darkness, the drones are pushed into position.
