Hundreds of fans of Israel\u2019s Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team \u201cwere ambushed and attacked in Amsterdam\u201d on Thursday night as they left the stadium following a Europa League game against Dutch side Ajax, the Israeli embassy to the United States said on social media platform X. <\/p>\n
Social media video shared by the embassy showed videos of what it said was violence against Maccabi fans. <\/p>\n
Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar said 10 citizens were injured and advised citizens to stay in their hotels. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe impression from the reports (are) that the situation is calming down in the last hour,\u201d Sa\u2019ar said. <\/p>\n
In a statement from his office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the violence \u201cserious\u201d and said he was ordering the \u201cimmediate release of two rescue planes\u201d to assist Israeli citizens. <\/p>\n
The Israeli leader also urged Dutch authorities to \u201cact firmly and quickly against the rioters and ensure the peace of our citizens.\u201d <\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s foreign ministry overnight Friday said about thirty people have been arrested so far. The statement did not say when those arrests were made or who was arrested. <\/p>\n
Maccabi fans had been in the Dutch capital ahead of Thursday night\u2019s Europa League game against Ajax. <\/p>\n
Amsterdam\u2019s police said it boosted its presence in the city\u2019s center on Wednesday night, citing \u201ctensions\u201d in several areas, one day ahead of the soccer match. <\/p>\n
Officers \u201cprevented a confrontation between a group of taxi drivers and a group of visitors who came from the adjacent casino\u201d on Wednesday night, the police said in a statement on X, noting another incident in which a Palestinian flag was torn down in Amsterdam\u2019s center by unknown perpetrators. <\/p>\n
The police also said a demonstration was planned on Thursday near the stadium ahead of the soccer match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. <\/p>\n
