{"id":9765,"date":"2024-11-12T11:37:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T11:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/12\/archbishop-of-canterbury-faces-calls-to-resign-over-church-child-abuse-failings\/"},"modified":"2024-11-12T11:37:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T11:37:57","slug":"archbishop-of-canterbury-faces-calls-to-resign-over-church-child-abuse-failings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitaltradecenter.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/12\/archbishop-of-canterbury-faces-calls-to-resign-over-church-child-abuse-failings\/","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop of Canterbury faces calls to resign over church child abuse failings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3dae5jq001i26nzfwt0cccx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Archbishop of Canterbury, the most senior cleric in the Church of England, is under mounting pressure to resign after a damning report accused him of failing to take sufficient action against a sadistic child abuser.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b00073b6mmp5hlyaq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A review of the church\u2019s handling of \u201chorrific\u201d abuse perpetrated by John Smyth has put Archbishop Justin Welby\u2019s position in doubt after it found that he \u201cheld a personal and moral responsibility to pursue this (case) further\u201d once aware of it, while a cover-up had been perpetrated by the church hierarchy who knew \u201cat the highest level, about the abuse.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b00083b6ma6jq18k6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now, three members of the Church of England\u2019s governing body, the General Synod, have started a petition calling for Welby to stand down immediately.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b00093b6mq9n80d7s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As well as heading the Church of England, the Archbishop of Canterbury acts as the \u201cfirst among equals\u201d leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes the Episcopal Church in the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000a3b6m9yu53t4z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Scrutiny of Welby centers on what he knew of allegations against Smyth, who is now dead. The former British lawyer has been considered the worst abuser to be associated with the Church of England, having carried out \u201cprolific, brutal and horrific\u201d physical, psychological, and sexual attacks on as many 130 boys and young men, according to the Makin Report, released on November 7. The report details abuse spanning from the 1970s up until Smyth\u2019s death in 2018; it frequently involved savage beatings, with even members of his own family among the victims.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000b3b6m5ii9w5xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The independent review, commissioned by the church, found that while Welby \u201cmay not have known of the extreme seriousness of the abuse\u2026 it is most probable that he would have had at least a level of knowledge that John Smyth was of some concern.\u201d It added that \u201cit is not possible to establish whether Justin Welby knew of the severity of the abuses in the UK prior to 2013.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000c3b6m9r1blutk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Bishop of Newcastle, however, told the BBC on Monday that Welby\u2019s position was untenable. Helen-Ann Hartley said it was difficult for the church to continue to \u201chave a moral voice\u2026 when we cannot get our own house in order.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000d3b6mnx67chqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lambeth Palace, the archbishop\u2019s headquarters, said in a statemen on Monday that Welby \u201cdoes not intend to resign\u201d and that he has \u201capologised profoundly both for his own failures and omissions, and for the wickedness, concealment and abuse by the church more widely.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3dag55s000o3b6m8zh3jdwj@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"failure-to-act\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Failure to act<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000f3b6mtjj0bc76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After Channel 4 News reported on Smyth\u2019s abuse in 2017, the Bishop of Guildford, Andrew Watson, came forward as a victim, saying he had suffered a \u201cviolent, excruciating and shocking\u201d beating at the hands of Smyth.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000g3b6mrl2dtjkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Smyth died in South Africa aged 77 while under investigation by UK police but the church\u2019s review found that there was a \u201cmissed opportunity\u201d in 2012 and 2013 by the highest levels of the church to \u201cproperly\u201d report him to law enforcement. The failure to do so, it concludes, \u201cmay have resulted in an ongoing and avoidable safeguarding threat.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000h3b6mafelnfce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Smyth, who was accused of carrying out abuse at his home, identified several of his victims through evangelical Christian summer camps he helped run for students from Britain\u2019s elite private colleges in the 1970s and 1980s. Although Smyth sought ordination to the Church of England, he was refused and moved to Zimbabwe in 1984. The report estimates he went on to abuse 85 to 100 male children aged 13 to 17 in Africa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000i3b6me04xb6ym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The case is particularly sensitive for Welby, who was educated at Eton College, the most famous private school in Britain, and who worked at the summer camps where he met Smyth. He later exchanged Christmas cards with Smyth and donated small amounts of money to his \u201cmissions\u201d in Zimbabwe, according to the report.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000j3b6m0uek3bvu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some church officials were made aware of Smyth\u2019s abuses through a report into his activities as far back as 1982 but Welby, ordained in 1993, has insisted he did not know about any abuse until 2013.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3daer9b000k3b6me5r89o6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The archbishop accepts that at the point he was informed, he \u201cpersonally failed\u201d to ensure that Smyth was \u201cenergetically investigated\u201d but has insisted he plans to stay in post.
