Steinmeier said at an unrelated event in Berlin on Tuesday that \u201cour country needs a government that is capable of taking action.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000b356m31qntekp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThat is why we must not lose any time now. We must find answers to the question of how we can make our state better able to act,\u201d Steinmeier added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000c356mvfpxxsx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The greater clarity on a date for elections, originally due to be held in September 2025, comes just a week after Scholz\u2019s government coalition fell apart as he fired his finance minister, Christian Lindner, following a major disagreement on Germany\u2019s economic future.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000d356mmklixj1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Scholz initially announced that he planned to hold a confidence vote on January 15, but he came under immediate pressure from the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) opposition party to hold them earlier.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000e356md14tewes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, said last week, \u201cthere is absolutely no reason to wait until January\u201d to call the confidence vote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000f356mnfzjkdir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Scholz\u2019s position on the date seemed to shift over the weekend. On Friday, he tweeted that he would \u201clike to facilitate new elections as soon as possible.\u201d Then, on Sunday evening, he told German TV that he would be willing to call the confidence vote before Christmas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3efffmf000g356m4tzdosx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Scholz is currently leading a minority government with the Greens.
